How do I shorten impliment driveshaft

A lot depends on the shaft. If it has the welded on end you have to remove that then shorter the tube and then weld the end back on making sure you time the U-Joints correctly. Some shafts are as simple as cutting in your case say 1.5 inches out of each part and you have it as you need it but all depends on the type you have as to how to do it. Me I can almost do it in my sleep but I have done a good many over the years

If it's a metric shaft then you simply remove the shield and cut the tubes by an appropriate amount on both ends... the shorten the shields by a corresponding amount.

If it's a square shaft then you need to cut the weld on the square adapter where it's welded into the tube... then you remove the adapter, shorten the tube by the amount needed then reinsert the adapter. If you cut it right... and you cut the tube square on a chop saw... it should not be difficult to get the adapter centered correctly. Check it on 4 opposing points with a straight edge or square to make sure it's centered then reweld with a 7018 or mig. Don't forget to shorten the bar so it can bottom on the adapter.
The adapter doen't need to be centered too perfectly or balanced on a 540 shaft as it's not a big issue at that speed...

Usually all you have to do is cut the inner shaft a
little shorter so it doesn't bottom out at the
shortest length needed on the tractor. You could use
a hacksaw or a zip disc in a grinder to shorten it.

That's what I do and in the process take a tad more off the shield so that I can better join the sections when it becomes necessary. Use a band saw or chop saw. Not really a big task.

Added thought. Most shafts are keyed so that the joints work in unison.....if the shaft is on a bench cross wise in front of you and you pull one end toward you the coupling on the other end needs to be able to come to your also. If it moves up rather than down the joint will not function properly.
