How much power will a T/A handle?

Gonna build up my 400 farmall and was wondering what can the T/A in its stock form handle for power? Hate to build an awesome motor if I can't get it to the ground! How about the clutch as well? Thanks for the help. DK

all depends what you do to the motor, have to build each piece to match what you do, you can get a heavy duty t/a for pulling and there is all kinds clutch options as well , everything has to work together to get the best setup, i had a farmall m i pulled 5500 - 8500 lb classes and i was always near the top,

From what I researched when we built my 400 a stock 400 TA in good working order will support 75-85hp with no issues. If your going to get serious 320+cid, I would replace the TA with a rebuilt unit suited to take more hp. Depends on your build up, are you splitting the tractor or doing the slugs and sleeves in the tractor. If your splitting it go through the TA and transmission.

A T/A can't even handle stock HP. Around here IH's are sold with the T/A either "out" or "going out".

Let them shift them! Who cares. I have only pulled against one guy that could shift one at the right time and beat me. Everyone else still doesnt know!!!!

Ouch, I sense some hostility out there. Does a 400 with a TA touch a senstive spot? I agree most guys do not know when to shift them. Personally I do not shift the TA on this 400 till the 8500lb class. Sorry, I forgot most of the guys that hate TAs have hit the trailers buy that point LOL

Never shift up under a load always shift down can't use them in some clubs but you can use a power block

Naah Not a touchy subject. Just dont see the advantage or why everybody is scared of a torque. Pick a gear and pull! Most spin out after shifting anyways.

Where I pull you aren't allowed to use the TA per se, You must decide if you are going to have it in TA or DD before you make the pull. Just wondering if I decide to run in 2TA instead of 1DD what it could handle without the heartbreaking embarassment of getting 3/4 down the track on the most awesome pull of the year and having the old girl come to a slow stop with the engine still revving!!

Our local pulling club allows use of the TA in all of our pulling classes.

I have 10 farmalls in my collection of that have TA's plus a Super HTA & have had to rebuild most of the TA's. It is our experience that the standard HD ramps & rollers do not hold up well under adverse conditions.

We are having success with the new "heavy duty sprague" that functions like the overriding PTO accessory. The cost is only a couple hundred dollars more than the standard HD ramps & rollers.
