how much seed per acre

planting an acre of sweet corn this year but how much to put down per acre.... i am only planting 1 acre and i know okra is 10lb. per i figure corn seed weighs the same and is about the same size.....????? would 10 pounds be enough sweet corn to cover an acre???

Field corn is normally planted based upon a "population" per acre. That varies from probably 18000 plants (ON the low side) to 30,000+ per acre. Find out what population the company recommends for their seed and go from there. Most field corn varieties have 80,000 seeds per bag.......and that bag weight will vary depending upon the size of the seed. 10 pounds does not sound like enough.

Hum, let me do the math out loud for field corn:

average bag of seed corn is 45lbs of 80,000 kernals. Plant 32,000 per acre.

So, field corn one plants 18 lbs of corn per acre.

But sweet corn, you might only want 18,000 plants per acre??? I'm guessing? That would come out to just over 10 lbs.

Now, sweet corn seed is wrinkles, so likely wieghs a little less than field corn seed? I'm guessing?

So, that 10 lbs might be about right - depends on the weight of the corn seed.

But, I'm not a sweetcorn guy, so - wait until the smart people answer.

well thanks fer the replies... think i will ask the guy at the co-op he should know... not a huge fan of the co-op guy he can be a lil nasty like he hates his job and your a pain in the a$$ for askin a question and he is hard to understand... i cant figure out what he is sayin

If you've got a Southern States nearby, they're all stocking sweetcorn seed in 10 lb bags at a fairly good price. Advice is usually spot on as well.

Yes 10#s is enough to plant an acre.....I am up to 12 acres this year ......A 25# bag plants roughly 2.5 acres give or take......you will be fine with 10#s........
