How could a person test a generator on a JD A to find out if its the generater or voltage regulater.I disconnected the battery and it stops running and voltmeter when I turn the lights on goes negative.

Dave, your post indicates that this is beyond your present level of experience. Get a knowledgeable person to do this for you.
Voltmeter goes negative?

Im not at home so dont have my John T's Charging Troubleshooting URL LInk handy, find it and in Para 5 it tells how to easily determine if non charging is the fault of the genny or the VR

I see you have gotten advice to ground the field winding, as well as to
apply battery voltage to the field winding.
Both are correct, depending on which type of generator you have.
I don't know what type of generator you have, but I would want to find out before I tried either.
Otherwise it may cost you a VR anyway.

Walt, I hope you meant to the batterys GROUNDED POST??? NOTTTTTTTT its hot UNgrounded post??? I DO NOT mean anything bad or any disrespect, I just dont want the poster to do the wrong thing in case he didnt understand what you meant by jumping to the battery post!!!!!

So the POSTER will understand,

To force a genny into its max charge condition and by pass the Voltage Regulators or Light Switches (on cutout relay systems only) grounding charge control functions:

YOU TEMPORARILY GROUND THE GENNYS FIELD POST and if it charges then but NOT otherwise, the problems the VR isnt well grounded,,,,or the VR is bad,,,,,,,or on cutout relay and light switch control systems the light switch isnt well grounded or is bad or the wires open from FLD on genny to FLD on VR or to the light switch....

Take care Walt and Merry CHRISTmas

Dave, don't let anybody tell you to find someone to do it for you! This forum is all about people helping others to do things and to increase their abilities.

Those of us, including myself, who told him to ground the field are correct for a John Deere A Generator, which is what he stated (about have to take a man for his word) They used Class A same as IHC and Oliver, it was mainly a few Fords and a few Massey Harris that used the Class B generators, but a John Deere two cylinder, including the John Deere A, were Class A.

Hope this helps, Merry CHRISTmas n God Bless
