I ran across an article a couple years ago about a farmer in Leonardtown, MD that was going to try growing catnip. Apparently there's a pet toy manufacturer out that way? The article said they currently ship catnip in from Oregon and Washington.
I've got about 5 acres here at home to play with and another 15 that will be available at my mom's in a couple years. Seems like, with such small acreage available to me, some type of niche crop would be best. I'm guessing profitability of conventional crops is best on large, high volume operations?
Also, I haven't found much info on what equipment is needed to harvest catnip. I did find one picture that was a combine with a special head? The article mentions that it is very similar to tobacco in terms of processing.
Any thoughts, info and suggestions from those more knowledgeable than I am are greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Anthony
