HP requirements

I am looking at a JD 210 disc harrow that is 14 ft wide. What HP requirements would be needed to pull this disc. Would be for leveling only as I have a cutting offset disc.

Thanks

I assume you mean that this is a tandem disc? Most times a light tandem disc can be handled with 70 hp or better, depending on the soil type. The heavier the soil, the more power that's needed. An offset of that size will probably want 130 + hp to work properly.

I would go with a 40 or so HP, about 35-50, just make sure it has a good frame size, small tractors dont do well. These people are crazy.

I use a 14 foot behind a 720 jd 58 hp. In heavy soil thats about she'll handle without duals and going real slow. 70 or more HP sounds like an accurate choice

Have you ever actually pulled a tandem disc? Judging by your statements here, I'd say not, or you're a lot crazier than me.

Yes I have pulled a tandem disk. My other disc is a 10-12 Foot JD BWA which is a lot older than what I am looking. I have a 100 HP tractor and was just trying to get a feel for what would be needed. I turn to the people here because someone here will know the answer to all questions.

Thank you others for your reply.

Depends on the disc blades. Cone blades were an option on the 210. They take more hp because they move more soil. I bought mine in 1977- it is a good match for the 4020- 94 pto hp. The 3020, under 70 pto hp, could not handle it and do a decent job. Both tractors had fluid rears and duals. Neighbors typically pulled an 18 foot disc with their 4020. You won't enjoy breaking and buying those cast iron standards. Way better choices in discs. Get something with solid steel supports for the disc gangs.

I would want atleast 85 to 90 to pull it at 6mph, a 210 isn't a bad disk, buy a 215 and 130hp wouldn't be too much! the 110 isn't much more than a packer!

He was replying to the other guy- not you.

Without knowing what that disk looks like, I'd say you 100 HP tractor should be more than enough for a 14' tandem disk.

Thank you again for your replys and to RodINNS sorry for the short string that I had. I agree with what you said and a 35-50 HP tractor would not pull this disc. BTDT with a MF 165 and JD BWA just to try to level the field. Works if you drop the wheels down but puts alot of stress on the old girl.

Hi , I am not ( by far ) a expert on the subject of disc harrows ( or anything else for that matter ;) ) . That said , I pulled a 21 foot Oliver 263 with 18" blades up and down a damp hill side ( 90 acres ) cutting cornstalks this spring with my 1755D oliver ( 86 HP - fresh rebuild , Loaded tires - singles - and cast centers with spin-outs and 50% tread ) I pulled it with the wheels up mostly at 5 - 6 mph unless I was getting stuck in the wet spot . The ground was fairly light and sandy in spots to heavier in other spots . The property owner got his planter tractor stuck in the same spot I got stuck in so it wasn't a tractor size problem I don't think . Moral of my experience - Your conditions might let you pull it with a tractor that has less HP than the majority thinks is needed to handle it . My neighbors didn't think my tractor would do it with the wings down but it did . I didn't feel as though I was tearing up my tractor , it only lugged down in a couple of spots otherwise it was a good workout for it . ...Randy
