HP Requirements

Is there a [i:c7f7abe420]rule of thumb[/i:c7f7abe420] for HP requirements for subsoilers?? I'd like to build a small one and wonder if 35 hp will handle 2 shanks 12" deep, with just a point, no sweeps.

I think 35-40hp per shank is what used to be recommended.

Soil type, soil moisture, intended depth, desired travel speed, is the tractor 2WD or 4WD, hydrostat or gear drive?
Around here one shank with a 10" tip will stop a 55HP 2WD with good traction on dry clay.

All depends on how much you want to accomplish with each pass. I have pulled two chisel shanks a foot deep with my 20hp Deere M in tight clay but it took numerous passes at various angles, dropping down a few inches each trip. 12" is really not all that deep for a subsoiler; most are designed for 18-24". I don"t think you will have problems with two shanks on a 35hp tractor if that is all the deeper you are wanting to dig.

I have a 28-hp MF compact util tractor, 4-WD. The sub-soiler has a 2" wide "shovel" on the bottom. At 8-10" deep, the four wheels are scatching for traction. And I have a loader on the front, and almost 400# of weight on each of the rear wheels.

Forget the second one and go with only one. And then you will still have all you can pull.
