Hy-Tran...I give up

5 gallon buckets of the Shell stuff are $140 at the dealer now. Doesn't even look or smell the same as the old Akcela stuff. I'm done bending over for some wonder fluid that supposedly cures cancer and will bring world peace.

It's on to the white bucket premium NAPA fluid for me, still $87/pail. I'm sure the consensus will be that all my tractors will spontaneously combust...

Let it rip.

IF you will buy it by the barrel you will see a cheaper price and if you have 4-5 tractors it will make more sense than for just a couple. We buy it by the barrel and all of our oil is by the barrel except for 80/90 or the 75/90 synthetic. When I change oil in tractors this spring I will use about a barrel of engine oil to do it. As for the Hytran We have not used that in anything except for the one with power shift. I guess I figure there are more expenses to that than the oil will cost for it. So cheaper to go with the Hytran. As for the tractors suddenly combusting I doubt it over just some oil. All those older tractors from before all the power shift models I doubt it will matter it has not for us. Though we don't have a single tractor with a TA in it. 856 might though the lever has not been moveable since it came on the yard.

55 gallon barrel price was $1,390, or $25.27 per gallon. This compared to 5 gallon pails at $28.34/gallon. A little savings. I go through 35-50 gallons per year.

I've been led to believe that the new
Hytran is made by Shell. And supposedly
the fluid sold at Napa is the same Shell
fluid as the new Hytran. Is this correct?
And if so, what is the name on the Napa
fluid? Is it marketed as Shell or is it a
Napa branded fluid? I need to change fluid
and filters on my Hydro 70 and am a bit
nervous about using something besides
Hytran.

Well i USE to Use Hy Tran. , but now ah i don't thinks so . lately i have been working on a 1250 Cub cadet and it needs the fluid changed as i don't think it has had a filter or fluid change since NEW . Yep i got a new ing. switch from the old local I H store for far less the the internet wanted but i had left my NITRO tablets at home when i asked about two gallon of Hy tran and had to get into my inhaler . total sticker shock . SOOOooo i started looking and Raul king has What they say is the same as Hy Tran for a BUNCH less . So the war Dept. and i took a ride one Saturday after noon down to the closest Raul King and they had Fluid for the Deeres , the massey's and Fords and I H's and i got a two gallon jug for like 34 bucks . according to the label it meet Case I H spec's.. I know i need to service the tractors out at my buddy's place as soon as it warms up and the 1066 and my 806 will need changed and we will order in two 55 gallon drums from Raul King . IF something fails due to the oil you can bet your bippy i will be screaming .

What's wrong with ordering the oil from Viscosity & doing it right the first time? They seem to be priced in the middle of the road & you can get it as small as a gallon or they can get you a semi load delivered. A 330 gal tote would be the next size down from trailer if you don't quite need that much bulk.

I use Hy-Gard in all my equipment.....regardless of color. This way I can switch between implements and not worry about cross contamination. And yes....Hy-Gard is also
pricey....but then again, what isn't these days???

There's Viscosity dealers all over creation. Probably half of your CaseIH dealers carry it, but there are also lots of independent dealers. Little guys, you know, the kind you all say we should be supporting?

What does the smell have to do with anything?

"All over creation" may be, but the closest one is 2 hours from me. As for the smell, it's just another clue I'm not getting the wonder fluid everyone claims it is.

If I had a new Case/IH tractor with a powershift I would put hytran it - but I also probably wouldn't be posting here either. The older 560/656 get

Although I do admit I still buy Hytran for my Cub Cadets with hydrostats - including my 1450.

Viscosity was contracted by Case/NH to produce hy-tran until a few years ago, then they started contracting with Shell, and the formulation changed. But Viscosity still makes the same hy-tran and you can still buy it. Some dealers carry both, some only carry the Shell version. And there are independent distributors for Viscosity hy-tran.

(quoted from post at 10:38:10 03/10/23) I dont understand . Is Viscosity the actual Hy-Tran
or is it a cheaper equivalent?

Yes.

As pete said Viscosity was the producer of lubricants for CaseIH, and IH up until a couple of years ago when they switched to Shell. Viscosity owns the rights to the ingredients so they can keep producing their own version.

Viscosity can not legally call their product "Hy-Tran" because that trademark is owned by CNH (Case New Holland), so officially it is an "equivalent" product.

It is also less expensive than the current Shell Hy-Tran Premium product sold by the CaseIH and NewHolland dealers.

We carry Viscosity ultraction in eastern NC. 5 gallon bucket is $118 Viscosity owns the formula. CNH owns the hytran name.

My 806 manual just says IH Hy-Tran fluid. Maybe that's all there was in 1963, but today there are several versions of hy- tran. It's made by Shell in Dubai. Oil is oil as long as the spec is the same. If you look at the chemical specs of the tractor supply premium universal tran/hydraulic fluid it is made for this application and even says it's for use where all the hy-tran versions are called for. It's 65.99 for 5 gallons hy-tran is 112 for the same amount and it's not any different. Most folks on here are die hard hy-tran fans but not for any scientific reasons that I can see.

It's no longer patented so anyone can make that oil, the name is mir important than the formula when there is no patented. Patents run out they are not renewable, copyright on a name is renewable.
