Hydraulic dump trailer

I have a little single cylinder hydraulic dump trailer that it pukes out the hydraulic fluid when I let it down. It looks foamy when the fluid comes out. What would be causeing this? Its an older one, all self contained. I've tried CIH hytran oil and a cheaper hyd oil in it.
Any help is appreciated.

info like where fluid is leaking from would help diagnose.

Fluid comes out of the fill hole in the unit. Doesn't leak any place else. It acts like its over full but its not.

I've seen that happen on several of those hydraulic tilt trailers. Must be an inherent design flaw in the pump/reservoir unit. Would it be possible to somehow modify the fill/vent plug? Maybe extend it up so it is higher? The ones I have witnessed didn't lose all that much oil, but it sure would make a mess on your shoes or pants leg if you were standing in the wrong place.

May need a restrictor orfice to slow it down when you lower it. May just be dumping the oil back in to the tank so fast it foams and there is no where for the foam to go but out.

It's probably air that's causing the foaming. May be a suction leak before the pump or it may be that the return is being dumped back in on top of the resevoir. Return should be submerged or at the bottom of the resevoir...

Our dump trailer used to do the same..

Grandpa worked on it for a week trying to stop it. He changed all sorts of things around with no improvement. We ended up welding a washer on the rod that "drops" the trailer back down so it hits the frame and the bed comes down slowly and it has not bothered since.. that has been a minimum of 7 years ago now.

We got a tarp strap hooked to the "dump rod".. pull the tarp strap and hook it near the hitch and good to go.. By the time I get back to the scale at the salvage yard, or out of the way enough to close the tailgate at the landfill, it is usually within 6 inches of being all the way down (if not already all the way down)

Might try a one way flow control on the line will let full flow one way but restrick flow back. They use them on tail gates on trucks.

Oh, didn't understand the question.

Yea, a little different plumbing or a restrictor so it lowers slower, will keep the oil from shooting at the wrong angle, too fast, foaming up the oil in the resivor.

Sounds like the oil is shooting out of the cyl hose into the (typically small) resivor so fast it creats too much froth & oil bounce. No where to go but foam around & out the breather.

Does it have lines to both ends of the cylinder? If it does then the bed is droping to fast, the pump-tank assembly is not large enough to hold the fluid required and is storing the rest in the other end of the cylinder. When you let the bed down all of the fluid has to come back though the pump-tank and back into the top of the cylinder. If the bed come down to fast it just over flows the tank and you loose the fluid.

I fixed mine by using a 12" section of 4x4x3/8" tube, welded end caps on both side, drilled and tapped a 3/8" NPT hole in the top and bottom. Mounted the tank right about the existing tank fill cap, connected the 2 with a short section of hose and placed the vented cap in the 4x4 tank.

The tank catches the overflow when lowering the bed.
