Hydraulic help needed please

I wish to run a hydraulic log splitter off either a MF230 or MF265. It has a two way ram so I will need a flow and return. Both tractors only have the single hydraulic output to tip a trailer. Is there a simple way of providing a return? (Tap into a cover somewhere, unless there is somethig there already to accept a return?). Presumably if I was then on constant pumping I would get my flow. I realise the lift arms would raise but on the 265 I can shut those off with a lever.

Hi, the preferred choice is always the oil filler plug next to the gear levers. Ensure that the return hose is larger bore than the supply.
Adaptors can be purchased or the filler plug can be drilled and tapped to 1/2" with the necessary fittings.

The neatest return is the blanking plug under the seat on the left side of the lift cover, just in front of the hydraulic cross-shaft.Remove it with an Allen-key.

Hi Samn40,
I would agree that that is the neatest place to mount the return. However even if the return pipe is 1/2" bore you have to revert to a 3/8" fitting to fit the hydraulic cover. This can cause backpressure in the return line especially if using a single acting cylinder on a double acting control valve at moderate engine speed. When the cylinder is being allowed to retract you effectively have two lost of oil trying to pass through a restriction....that of the oil flow from the tractor and that from the cylinder.

First of all, the tractor hydraulics are going to be extremely slow for a wood splitter and second of all, you don't just need a return line. You need to have double acting hydraulics for a double acting cylinder. I'm not sure if you can run a single acting line into a double acting valve and just hook up a return line to make it work. Someone else will know better than I do. I know that you'll be doing a lot of waiting though using the 3 pt. hydraulics for the splitter.

We have used this return connection for years on all sizes of Masseys including tractors with auxiliary hydraulics and without any problems.

Have found the return plug mentioned. To be clear I have a double acting cylinder. I will fit a double acting spool valve, which needs a flow and return from tractor, so there should only ever be one flow back of oil. Re speed, why should this be any different to a loader? I have checked the loader on a 165 and this uses a flow to a (3 way) spool valve and a return into the same plug mentioned. Only difference is that it is fed from an adapter and isolator tap on top of the gear casing.
