Hydraulic motor

I have a small Vickers vane pump. Small meaning 3/4" shaft, 3/8" output, and 1/2" suction.

Can I run this as a motor? Will it fail to start because there is no rotation (centifical force) at rest. Will there be a shaft seal problem?

I only need to go in one direction.

You might be out of luck. All the vane pumps I have come accross are pressure compensated. Basically they won't move fluid when the output reaches a certain pressure.

I have no idea if you would be able to get to turn, let alone get any power out of it. I think a gear pump would work well though.

I am building a hydraulic drive for a sickle bar mower. I took a Char-lynn gear-roter motor with 1/2 ports of the shelf but it was too slow. Maybe 80 rpm

After reading your reply, I fitted a gear pump with 3/4 ports and it turns a little faster. Might be 150 rpm. I'd like to get around 300-400 rpm. I think the small vane pump would get me there if it worked.

I have two more Char-lynn gear-rotor motors attached to winches but I can't find displacement data on them.

You cn make a Char-lynn turn faster by making the rotor and outer gear shorter. If you reduce it by 50 % it turns twice as fast. There is a limit beyond which the splines on the drive shaft hav insufficient room, but you can make them pretty short. The issue may be your supply. If it is your H, it may have too low of a volume, a PTO, or belt pulley driven pump will be much higher output. If the charlyn is reduced in length, it also produces less torque, or needs more pressure to transfer the same power. JimN

I was able to find the displacement data buried in a Char-lynn service bulletin. The two winch motors have the same displacement. And I lucked out. They have 20% of the displacement of the motor that I took from the shelf. They are capable of 700 RPM max speed. I now have my 400 rpm. Here's hoping they have enough torque at 57 ft lbs.

Forget the H. I am putting the IH balanced head mower on my forklift. Weird huh? I have four hundred feet of eight foot high mulbury hedge. It is about eight feet wide as well. It takes all day to clip it. I should be able to do it in half an hour.

I'd use a gear pump , myself..Surplus center .com is the place I use for my hydraulics when I do modifications or repairs..Their online catalog is very complete...

Reducing the displacement, reduces torque. Is there any way to increase the flow with higher efficiency valves, larger radius elbows etc?
Some of those pumps when converted to motor duty require a seal update kit.
