Hydraulic Motors

I am thinking of running two hydraulic motors off one open center valve. I only need one rotation direction for both motors. So, I am thinking forward on the spool valve will run one motor and rearward on the same valve will run the other. Return flow would bypass the valve and go directly to the reservoir.

Anybody got a problem with this?

Well, I don't have a problem with it, but I can't speak for everyone.

It should work fine. You could also try plumbing the motors in parallel and putting a oneway check-valve in one line for each motor to prevent them from spinning in the wrong direction. This way they could both dump back through the spool valve and still only run in one direction.

Your way is probably less complicated...

The only problem is that you wont get any filtration or cooling of the oil. Motors generate a lot of heat depending on loads.

You did not say what the motors will be running but if what you are driving has a "flywheel affect" make sure your valve has a motor spool. Also make sure you return the oil to reservoir under the oil level and hopefully not close to the reservoir outlet. Cycle time may cause heat problems. How large is the reservoir and what displace are the motors?

OK, here are the specifics.

Vehicle is a Clark C-40 forklift. Probably forty years old.

Output port from the original two valve (lift and tilt) goes to a four circuit Vickers forklift valve. A selector on the return port reduces back-pressure on the original two valve and makes the gravity down function quicker when forks are not loaded.

Of the four circuits (a) runs a hydraulic motor that drives an IH Balanced Head sickle bar mower in both directions. It's a hedge clipper now. (B) runs a cylinder that folds the sickle bar, (c) runs a hydraulic winch on the mast, and (d) will run a direct drive (from a Detroit Diesel) air-brake air compressor on one port and a Getec 4000W generator which is also direct drive. Both accessories only need to run in one direction.

Are you confused yet?

BYW, I need one handle for the Vickers. Local shop has one but I don't want to pay his asking price of $50.

Also looking for a gas grill that will tie into forklift propane tank. (Just kidding)

Just reread your response.

Oil return is via original hose.

Not sure of cycle times. Air compressor has a 9 cubic in displacement Charlynn gear-roter. I haven't powered it up yet. I may swap in a 4.7 cubic in similar motor. The Getec is an engineered product. The generator currently turns at 2200 rpm at engine idle. Will have to use a hand throttle to achieve 3600 rpm.

I think reservoir is about ten gallons. I changed the oil last fall but can't remember how much I put in.

Every thing on the multi-function forklift works fine so far. It even functions as a forklift. I'm adding the air compressor now. It is surprisingly nimble without the counter weight. Capacity is down to about one ton now.

How long are you going to run this compressor at one time. You are going to have heat problem, You may want to go the smaller motor and change speeds with a belt drive. Send me a phone number.

Maybe five minutes. Enough to air up a tire or run an impact wrench when away from the shop. Yeah, there could be a heat problem. I'll cross that bridge when I get there. I have several heat exchangers around here.
