Hydraulic Pump

I've asked several questions about the hydraulics on a homemade backhoe and have come to the conclusion that the pump needs repair or replacing. I've elected to replace it, but I'm not exactly sure how to choose a replacement. The pump is labeled as a Vickers vane pump and has several patent numbers but nothing else on it. My question is, if I make sure the shaft size and rotation direction are correct, how do I choose a pump. If the relief valve works properly will it be a problem if the pump I choose is "stronger" than the one I am replacing?

Match the rotation and physical mounting dimensions - e.g. SAE-A 2 bolt. Then pick a pump that has a suitable flow rate - probably 10+ GPM. Pressure relief not the pump determines the maximum pressure the pump will produce.

Most of those old Vicker vane pumps where in the 8-10gpm range. As for stronger pump well that is what the relief valve is for to keep hyd pressure at a set number and most of the time that is in the 2500psi range

If you look closely, I believe you will find the pump model number stamped into it, possibly in the mounting flange area.

Once you have that, it should be possible to find the "specs" on the 'net.

The older Baum Hydraulics catalogs had an "identify Vickers vane pumps" section. I will look later and see if I still have one around.

I think I'm down to the last question. How do I determine if the engine runs CW or CCW (ie what direction do I look from?) Since the pump will be facing the engine it should run in the opposite direction, right?

Thanks for all you guys help!

Look at the engine facing the shaft end. In other words stare directly at the end of the shaft, which way does it turn? CW or CWW when running.Same with your pump. Vickers pumps can rotate in either direction by flipping around the center portion of the pump.
When buying a replacement pump, the pump specs will tell you for the type of engine and rotation direction.

For a shaft driven pump mounted on the front of an N-series you want a counter clockwise pump.
