hydraulics question

I have a John Deere 2240 Loader tractor I recently purchased. I have a three point hitch attach backhoe that I want to hook up to the tractor. The 2240 has a double spool valve to run the bucket loader. There is also two live hoses that run from the pump to the back of the tractor. I figure these will run my backhoe ok since the hoe has its own spool valves and there are no remote hookups on the tractor itself. I Kept those in place and teed off these two lines to put a single spool valve with two more remotes to run a drag scraper or a hydraulic disc. After hooking all of this up, I now don"t have any power to either bucket control up front. However, If I activate the new single spool valve (with nothing attached to it) and one of the bucket valves at the same time, the bucket will work. Is it safe for the system and will it work to simply put a ball valve before the single spool valve to create preasure back to the double spool valve?

Stop what you're doing or you could have real expensive repairs. The first thing you need to do is find out if your tractor has open or closed center hydraulics. I thought JD used a lot of closed center systems but don't know about your specific tractor. Each type of system has to have the proper type of control valve to run it. Some valves can be easily converted from one to the other. Some can't be. You need to talk to the JD dealer to find out what type of system you have and you need to talk with an experienced hydraulic shop to find out what type of valves the hoe has and most inmportantly, how to hook everything up properly. I am sure JD hydraulic pumps don't come cheap. Especially if they are for a closed center system. If you just have a disc or something with only a cylinder that runs off the remote couplers it doesn't matter what type of system. Any time you hook up another valve to control the cylinders, all the components have to be set up the same. You can't mix and match open and closed center pumps and valves. The whole system has to be compatable. Hopefully you'll get this before you try to run your tractor. Wouldn't want to see you have spend a big chunk of cash for repairs right after Christmas. Generally JD tractor of the '40 vintage are closed center. But I don't know about the 2240. Often one can tap the pressure and return at the rear mounted remote valve, but the valve on the attachment has to be converted to closed center. Some valves convert, some don't so you may have to change the valve. The modular valves from Prince are handy for making a custom valve and are easy to set up open or closed center. That's what I used to make a new valve for my Long 1099 backhoe that I first used on my MF-135 that I now use on my JD 4020 and made the conversion from open center to closed center.

2240 is closed center as the previous posters stated. Open center valves will not work worth beans.
There is a place on the high pressure linea few inches ahead of the transmission hydraulic filter to tap high pressure oil for the loader, backhoe and any other hydraulic load.
All hydraulic oil should be returned via the port in the hydraulic filter cover. If the cover doesn't have a port. Purchase the proper cover from Mother Deere.

thank you all for your help. I see now that I know only enough about hydraulics to get myself into trouble. I haven't done anything more with the set up I used because I was afraid I might screw something up like you all said. I'm getting a john deere guy out here to fix it for me.
