I dont do fractions

Shouldn't be to hard on the kid.
How often do you actually see fractions being used in today's world? On old vehicles, construction and drill bits. Nearly everything has went to decibels or metric measurements.

Kids aren't taught to work on antique cars and trucks in shop classes these days. And when was the last time an automobile was sold in the US that used fractional fasteners?

Us that still have a use for a 9/16th wrench are becoming antiques like the equipment we work on.
In an old USA tractor forum, that’s kind of an odd reply.

I had to go buy a big metric socket set 2 years ago, for the new tractor I got - it’s 20 years old.

Very rare I need to get out a metric wrench or socket, but needs to be in the tool rack these days.

1/2, 9/16, 3/4 (which is also 19mm) and 15/16 can get a lot of wrenching done here.

Metric is very odd, as very few wrench sets are complete, but different brands of stuff seem to use different combinations of metric bolts so you end up needing every size anyhow. Seems silly.

Bolt and a nut hold stuff together, bigger holds stuff together more, smaller is cheaper and fits in tighter areas. It wouldn’t have to be complicated, but every busy body seems to feel important by needing to come up with their own ‘standard’ that is no better than the old standard was.

Edit: kids aren’t dumb when they don’t know something or ask a question. That is a teaching moment and good for the kid to learn.

The initial message it sounds like the kid was spouting off with an attitude of doesn’t want to be bothered or doesn’t want to learn, and that attitude, if it was there, really really bothers me.

So I can see both types of replies here to the various comments, dumb kids or hey try to help the kid! It depends on the actual attitude…..

That's a possibility or might not be the case at all.

We need the OP to clarify this. (Who hasn't contributed anything to this thread since he started it. Some sites consider that trolling.)

Or the kid, there's two sides to every story.

That’s hilarious. I agree it would be nice to have incite on the attitude but if the OP hasn’t been back with 143 posts and still going this thread is definitely not about the OP.

And another problem we have today. No parental responsibility... "that the teachers job" ... its sad that many think that way.
You said it! My mom was a teacher in the late 50s/early 60s. Growing up, she had me doing flashcards for math and helped me with other subjects with encyclopedias and dictionaries. When our kids were in school we did the same, although it was more by looking things up on the computer. The school gave them the basis of what they needed to know but we were expected to use our own resources to complete their education. Too many people don't take the responsibility to help their kids complete their education. Thinking schools are going to teach them everything they need to know to be a productive and knowledgeable person is assinine. Did I sometimes get frustrated about how the public schools taught them, or failed to teach them? Yes! But we took it upon ourselves as parents to make sure they understood both book learning and common sense reasoning. If you have kids, some of their education is done at home!

This ^^^

I did 23 yrs in the Navy, kids have always been ignorant, even us. I had plenty of teaching moments with "my" sailors and I always took full advantage of them to educate.

For some, its just eastier complain about it.
Speaking of "teaching moments", my third job as a tech was at a tire store. I had been out of tech school for about a year about 1990. I was supposed to put struts in a Dodge K car. I had only done them in Fords before that and didn't know that the Dodge used MacPherson struts. I found out real quick that you didn't take the center nut off in the car. I didn't know what I didn't know! The seasoned mechanic who was there was kind of a jerk and instead of teaching me the right way he made a big deal about it and made me look like an arse. He could have just shown me the right way to do it, but he didn't. I've carried that through my career and whenever the young, new guys where I work now don't know something, I try to teach them instead of berate them.
