I got the squeeks

ok..took my 54 out for a spin today..kicked in the sherman cruised down the road at full throttle..but at full throttle i get a bad sqeek coming from the fan belt..when i back off just a hair i dont get the sqeek but then if it goes downhill and the rpms raise back up it will squeek again..is this just a wore belt that needs replaced? It looks really good to me no weatherchex or dryrot..just looking for some advice

if fan belt fits the pulley and is tight with correct deflection when pushed, and not chaffed, cracket, or 'polished' from slipping on the sides, and not bottemed out in the pulley, then for sure check genny/alt pulley bushings and as dell said.. the aggravating water pump.. check for play in the fan, and look for dribble from weep hole.

not a problem to ignore, as the fan can pop off and bore a hole thru the rad

squeaks are first sign.. then dribble as seal gets hogged out from loose bearing, this leads to wobly fan.. then bearing goes and fan comes off and bores a hole in a 250$ radiator...

that progression can be 5 minutes, 5 hours or 5 years.. can't pin it down.. so best to ID the issue then take steps to fix.

I had the same problem on my 12 volt alternator Ford 600. Tighting the belt stopped the "squel" at high RPM. I thought the bearing on the alternator were going out. Most alternators on cars are run by "Serpentine" (flat 5 grove belt). Simple rubber band fan belts on these tractors, don't supply enough "traction" I would also use an "Industrial rated" fan belt.
