i hate iron haulers

local iron guy has a deere A dont get me wrong im not a deere person but i do have an A that needs some parts to fix they ship out to buy a farmall... anyway hes gonna haul it in for iron & wont even sell me any parts off it what a idiot.... im sure by the time the iron yard uses there crane to pick off his trailer there goes everything i need... Sorry guys just had to vent iron must be gold i even offered him 50 a ton more than he could get hauling it in & gee hes gotta pay the gas out too ...

Watch when he takes it off and beat him there. Offer the scrap yard a $100 premium over their normal price retail to you if they will unload it gentle.

i cant understand them guys. they get an old piece of equipment that someone will pay them a premium for and they wont sell it. i talked to a scrap guy one time at a sale and he was b*tchin about how much the old iron was selling for, them damn collectors are paying way too much for the stuff he wanted to buy and put a torch to. i asked him, why dont you sell the old stuff you get to the collectors? they will pay you a decent price for it. he got mad at me, said scr*w them collectors. i cant under stand em.

now thats a good idea never thought of that i know hes a regular in there so i can just tell the people who he is & they will probly wait for it to come in for me Thanks for that idea

Ya this yard does i have bought many things out of it just have to pay a little more than they paid not bad they arent greedy like the guys hauling it in

All the yards here do, its no bargain at 45 cents a pound for cast or mild steel but its all for sale. Main thing here, if you want something special the yard boss will take care of you, the better you tip him and the guys loading the better care they take.

I remember being 17 and hauling in scrap, the yard boss told be not to bring it in when the semis come in. After explaining why I bring it in that time of day and also helped out when he was in a pinch, he and the scale man said. You can bring your scrap in here any time of the day you want. Now that took one spring time to earn there trust. By golly that sure helped when school was out and I hauled in the summer time.

Look--this may offend someone in the scrap business, but that's just too bad.
It has been my experience that scrap haulers and people in the business are some of the most short sighted people I've ever met. They can't see past the price per ton/load, and you can spend a whole lot of time explaing how valuable/rare/historic something is to no avail. They simply don't get it! You have to keep in mind that you might be speaking to someone with urgent chemical dependencies, and has limitied social skills.
Your best bet was mentioned above--watch the guy's route, arrive the yard when he does, and pay the manager a premium.
I'm speaking from expereince as a former manager of an auto auction yard situated right next to a scrap yard. That's how the game is played!

I've known scrap haulers to bust up a $2000 tractor to sell it for $200 scrap.A scrap dealer
had a flat tire in front of my place last year.He
borrowed my jack,and i walked over to see if i could help him.Under the pile of old fence wire and hog feeders was a 2 bottom ford plow,a two
row cultivator and an 8 ft packer.He sold me all three for $25.

I knew a scrap guy once that would cut up what you wanted to save right in front of you and laugh while doing it. Scrap guys are a stupid lot. My 2 cents

I've dealt with salvage guys that went both ways - reasonable to total jerks.

The guy that totally amazed me though, was a jerk of a tractor dealer who had sold parts off his 20 acres of old iron for years who recently decided to scrap it all.

The day I saw them shut down for business, they had the scrap crusher with a giant claw on it parked on top of a Farmall M wide front and it had just bitten through the crankcase of a nice old R John Deere...

But you couldn't even tell the guy "hi" without him getting an attitude on you, much less try to buy anything from him...

Goes both ways- a nearby dealer scrapped several Deere 00 series combines, on condition that they be crushed the same day. Yard owner managed to keep a hydraulic motor or two for me, but many good parts got crushed, rather than let some farmers get a decent buy.
