I have a 2004 Windows XP SP2 that seems to have a virus on it. I don"t really want to pay somebody $60 to clean it up so I want to Reinstall windows XP and then delete this one I"m on. My main problem is saving pictures, music, hundreds of Adobe files,Adobe, and Firefox, which is the only browser that works right now. IE is acting up for some reason. I have 8-12 gb of memory and would like to get as much on them as possible becasue I have dial up internet and these things take forever to download back on.My main problem is deleting the old OS(which is the same as the new OS) I don"t want both of them because it asks you every time you start up which one you want to use. I also want to know how to save whole folders and programs at a time onto a usb key and be sure that they will be there 2 days later.

I got the full version of AVG from Grisoft, and it cleaned out all the spyware and any viruses that might have been left behind by the previous antivirus, all for $29 a year. I think it's the best thing since sliced bread.
Saved me a lot of hassles.

Have you tried system restore? Most of the time you can get back before the viris. You will not loose your files with system restore.

If you have not done that. Click on start--programs--accessories----system tools----then system restore. pick a date before you started to have problems then follow the instructions and click next.

take it to a good tech. my daughter has a 2 year old hp super duper compputer, it got virus, spyware, and some other kind of cooties on it, took it back to best buy to have the "geek squad" look at it. they said oh its too old,buy a new one, they ran a backup for all her files, cost me 200 dollars, computer wasnt fixed. our computer guy that services our shop computers fixed it for 60 dollars, installed firefox and some other stuuf, and he said the computer is fine, has a massive hard drive and stuff, still a good machine. i'll never use geek squad again!!

Not saying my MAC is virus proof, but am assured by MacBook folks that it is pretty darn hard to catch any. MacBook was/is a bit pricey, but I don't worry too much about it...also have an "educated" daughter to keep things going LOLLOL!!!

Our old computer had all our stuff on it and the CD burner died. We got a new computer and had been emailing stuff over to the new one a little at a time. Yesterday I got an 8GB USB Drive key fob from Sam's for $22. It took less than 10 minutes to copy and transfer everything!
We have 14" of snow on the ground and it's still coming down hard - looks like a real good day to have the exorcism on the old computer!

What kinda virus do you have? What are the popups that you are getting.Get the name of it and we will go from there..... idntno

Good job. Just a thought, if you or someone in the family has need for the old computer, CD drives are cheap and very easy to install.

How do you think investigators recover evidence off a hard disk without risking modifying anything? They boot it from a CD, typically using a bootable Linux CD, such as Knoppix. I suggest you find a friend with broadband, download Knoppix, burn a CD, then use Knoppix to copy your files off to a USB flash drive. Then you can reformat your disk and reinstall XP, if that's really what you want to do.
