I need some advice, timothy seeding rate.

I'm going to be air seeding timothy on about 50 acres in upstate NY. My seed book and salesman said about 8 - 10# per acre. Some have told me this is to low of a rate. What do you think? Any advice is welcome.

I normally shoot for 8-10#/acre here in VA.

Been growning timothy for a bit here on west coast. I use a brillion type seeder,packer at 25lbs/ acre in the fall. Cutting july 1st at 75 bales per acre fist time. Next year 135 60 pound small squares per acre first cut, 75 second cut. Seed heavy, some for the birds, some won't germinate, it's nice to have sod for the first time over at these rates. Seed is the cheap part once you do all the prep.

I run a small farm in Western New York and grow a timothy/birdsfoot treefoil mix (2:1 timothy to treefoil). I have a brillion seeder and put 10 to 12 lb/acre and have had good results.

I don't know if it changes anything, but I have heavy clay ground that has been in hay as long as I have worked it. Seed isn't exactly cheap, but by the time you add up the fuel, fertilizer, lime and your time, it might not hurt to put a little extra seed on until you find the rate that works best for you.
