Been reading this forum for sometime and has gleamed good info for all you old hands at this art of rebuilding.
I have just can upon a 1959 841 D i think, what is a sure fire metnod of making a good ID as to the model. Is there a place on this tractor that will tell me if it is an 641 or 841. I can make out the serial # and the last 2 numbers of 41 D.
Because of the rust and deteriation to the front of the starter housing the first of the number is gone. The serial # 84189.
I have 2 tractors. the #1 is an 841 D for sure--this second one looks the same with one exception the radius arms and drag links a smaller---but #1 tractor has power seering I guess that is the reason for a bigger arms and drag links. Thanks dugless

Look on the right side of the engine block for a raised casting number. It will be something like 310609 or B9NN6015C.
Post back with that number.

Rear end is larger on 8xx than 6xx measure the distance between the bolts that hold axle housings to rear housing if they are the same it is 8xx of shorter it is 6xx

I've never heard of a B8NN block. I have a 172 Diesel with a B9NN6015B casting number.
As 600ford said- look at the center of both rear ends in your tractors from behind, particularly the area where the top link rocker is pinned to the housing. The 800/801 is noticeably larger than the 600/601.

awhtx:
I went out and took a wire brush and cleaned all the grease/paint an a 8 turned into a 9. So B9NN6015A is a 841 D. Thanks for your responce and help. i had the injectors cleaned and will pick the fuel pump up in a couple of days. I will do the fuel filter, change oil, clean the Hyd. sump/refill. then ready to fire this tractor up. GOD bless

Doug,

If you look at Mr. Smith's post above, I think you have a 641D. The 8X1 series tractors had the 172 CI engines. Alan can enlighten you, but I think the 144 CI motor is less common and more expensive to find parts, kits, etc. But with light use, most of these old tractors will out last us without a full rebuild.

Mr. Smith
You hit it dead on the head
So I have a 641 D 144CI
This makes it a Workmaster instead of a Powermaster. I want to make sure cane the serial number be traced to make sure.

Unfortunately the serial number can only tell you the year the tractor was made, as they made the 6x1 and 8x1 series tractors at the same factory and used sequential serial numbers for the tractors as they came off the line, whatever order they came off the line, not specific ranges for specific models, so your serial number 84189 tells us it was made in 1959, but that's all it can tell us. Get the casting numbers off of the fronts of the axle housings like others have requested and if they agree with the casting numbers on the engine then it most likely is a 641D. You never can tell for sure even if all of the original numbers are there on the flat spot on the bell housing because there's always a chance that a transmission or engine swap has been done some time over the years and then you're looking at a mutt with an 6x1 engine but a 8x1 transmission and rear end, or vice versa.

Thanks to all who replyed, i can now safely stamp the #6 for the first number. my knowledge groes daily thru this forum.
Blessings on all
Doug
