ID my Ford by transmission numbers

Bought what I think is a 600. Hood says so, who knows. Serial number says 820 then 130848. There's a hole where SOS was previously. Trans number is 78H NDA7003B. Any help in identifying what I have? Engine number is 310905.

Sounds like either had a transmission or engine change
820 is a 800 series with 4spd trans and no pto or 3 point lift
130848 would make it a 55 model
310905 engine number is for a 134 engine used in the 601/701 series built in 58/59
Without photos I can only guess

The numbers stamped into that transmission are only correct for the tractor that the transmission was in when it left the factory. If it has the holes in the tin for the S-O-S gear selector, that sheet metal was originally on an '01 series tractor as the S-O-S was not yet being made while the hundred series was being produced. As Destroked said, that engine was in a 601 or 701 series tractor when it left the factory, and if it is an ag chassis model and not a row crop, and it originally had a S-O-S trans, then it was a 671 or 681. But since it has a 4 speed from an 820 in it now, I would call it a 621. If it has had the 3 point lift and PTO added, I would call it a 641.

Hi there. This is definitely a 5 speed. Has PTO and 3 points hitch. Only a single clutch. Can I assume this tranny number belonged to an 800? So confusing. Everything was bolted up. Has 15 tooth spline. Thanks for your help.

I always thought that the 820 had a 4 speed. If the transmission is stamped 820 and it's a 5 speed, then that's confusing. But it's definitely no longer a 671 because it would still have to have a S-O-S transmission to be a 671.

It's not confusing, the 820 usually had a 5-speed, see picture below. On the 800 series the four speed was not offered until near the end of the production run in 1957. It may have been an option for the 820 at that point as it was an option for the 821.

I think the original poster has a 671 where the SOS was removed and replaced with a 5-speed.

I can not argue with your literature, it just goes against the most well known documents used when researching Ford tractors from the 8N up to the early thousand series
I have made a notation in my copy for future reference

With a 134 engine, 5spd trans with single clutch and 3 point lift I would classify it as a 651, but it won’t have -01 clutch linkage
Does it have a 601 rear axle housing or one for a 800
