Im hooking up a Gm three wire alt and useing
a two wire idiot light like the ones used on a truck pto to tell you when its engaged. My question is one side has to be grounded to work
right? Or somehow does it work with both wires hooked into the dist side of the ballast resistor ?

One side connects to side of ignition switch that is hot when key is ON.
Other side connects to Alternator terminal # 1.

That means that your "pto" lamp & socket MUST not get a ground thru the mounting. Both sides of bulb must be isolated from ground.

Thanks ,JMOR
Sounds good to me.Someone had changed over to 12v
one wire system and used 110v house wire for wireing. Had a push pull switch instead of key switch so im redoing all this mess so i know what is what !!!!!!!

You don't need an idiot light if it is a one wire alternator setup unless you want to hook it up to see when the ignition switch is on. Are you sure you have the correct wiring diagram for what you want to do?

Yeah i took the one wire off it was fried and put a threee wire on it and rewired for it.Just makeing sure i got the idiot light wired in right before i fired it up.

Thanks RenegadeRick

I also just had to replace a GM Alt ( 1 wire ) and went to a 3 wire.....If it is wired correctly, should your idot light come on when ign is on and go off when running ?????
