Idler pully fix questions

I have an old hay rake that has an idler pulley in it and the bearing is wore out. Have any of you ever tried to split one of these stamped steel pulley apart and put in a new bearing?? This one looks like it has rivits holding it togeather and I'm thinking about tring to split it and put in a new bearing. Any ideas on this or I'm I #1 crazy and #2 to cheap to pay $350 for a new one??
Thanks

I remove the rivets and install bolts or pop rivets (steel) or even drill more holes and put in more rivets if space allows.

The bearing races should have numbers on them to cross to a new bearing or take the bearing to a distributor and they can fix you up.

Been there, done that!

I think you are stuck. I split one on a Kinze planter to look at and the metal rivited together was the outer race. Nothing to replace.

Unless time is free which is not to me you will still end up with $35 in it by the time you split it find a bearing put it back together your choice I have done both in certain situations.

I do things like this very frequently. Did the exact same thing on a Wheel Horse lawnmower. I replaced the rivets with 1/4" dolts. The dealer wanted $24 for the assembly, fixed mine for less then $6. But I have more time then money!

I have done them on a few ocassions. Generally a common bearing inside, replace the rivets or spot welds with screws/nuts, or rivet them over whichever you want.
Works ok and is cheaper.

Is the bearing gone or just dry. Try removing the side seals, clean it out insides, regrease it, and put it back together. I"ve done this many times.

Not one one in that application.. though i have driled out rivits on stamped pulleys and then used nuts/bolts to putem back together.. etc..

pay 350$ for an 12$ bearing.. I'm cheap just like you are.. try to split her.. worst case scenerio is you are buying the pully if you muck it up..
