If it could go wrong

it did. Whatever it is, it did. Not only the problems this morning, but now i need another piston and a new set of rings. I decided to get to work un-doing everything i did last night. Removed the flywheel, then the crankshaft, then the front pully, then the timing cover then on to that stuck piston. Started coming out from the bottom, then took the sleeve with it. OK, so lets try the top. Put a board over the piston and hit it with a hammer. Sorta worked, so i hit it again. Then again. Then piston and rings went everywhere. Top third of the piston is busted off completally. the middle two rings are completally destroyed and the oil ring and top ring are fine though. And now the sleeve is loose, so where do i begin??? I guess im going piston shopping. Tried to take a picture but the camera was dead. Well, nobody said it was gonna be easy

Days like this make you appreciate days when everything goes well. Just remember education is expensive. As long as you learn from the mistakes you are still making progress. Good luck.

Lanse, I have been following your saga. Email me your mailing address and I will send you a copy of the manual.

Did you ever use a ridge reamer on the top of the sleeve? You are now going to have to remove the sleeve and put on/in new O rings. Those old ones will not seal back up after being moved.

When you put the sleeve back in with new O rings the bottom area where the O rings seal needs to be cleaned to where the clean sleeve will turn by hand 360 degrees.

I will send you the O rings. I buy them 50 at a time.

it sure is, LOL. I dont think i learned anything with that piston either. This time the tractor is sitting around until i have more money to put into it, after dropping $340 yesterday. I'll take it apart, measure it, shim it if it needs it, and get the block back on the tractor. shuold have come up with a new piston and rings and god knows whatever else will break by the time my head gets here

Thanks. How do i get the sleeve out this time?? When i pounded the (remains of) the stupid piston out the bottom the sleeve went back down

You may be approaching the place where you buy new sleeves and pistons as a kit with rings. Without the bearings and valves. I have not bought a kit for two years but will call and see what his price to me is now. My price was a bunch lower than what I see them offered for. If I sold parts I would probly want what I see them for. But I don't sell parts other than what I make on my machines at work.

ideally id just like to get a new piston. All the others are about perfact, plus i dont have alot to work with

Just pound it out from the bottom with what ever you can get to set on the (edge of the sleeve). I set the block upside down on blocks and drive them out with a steel bar. A block of wood will work also after they are loose. You will find the O rings flat and hard. They were soft and round when installed. It is a heat and time thing that makes them hard and take set. The pistons on this engine is only suppose to be removed out the top. If you have not removed the ridge at the top of th esleeve you could have broke a ring going in. That could have caused the piston to bind up.

When you ger your (feeler gage) you need to place the piston down in the cylinder and see how thick of a thickness you can get down the side of the piston. Looking does not cut it. I can take a piston and make it look like brand new in my lathe but it will not necessarily work in any cylinder. It really needs to be checked with a 4 inch mic. Same as the cylinder diameters. If you have a wide ring gap you do not have a good matchup of piston and sleeve.

Are you putting the pistons in the holes the came out of ? Were the sleeves taken out ? The wear after a while causes them to be a matched set only. Try the other pistons in the sleeves WITHOUT rings, they should be a free fit MANUAL will give you clearance between piston and sleeve. Did you use a ridge reamer before you tried the piston and rings ? Even if you can't see it there is a ridge at the top of the sleeve, that will cause the top ring to break.

Thats too bad.At least when you get it together you wont have a problem with that piston and have to take it apart again.Maybe that piston was about ready to come apart anyway. It might be a good idea to put all new o rings on your sleeves while you have it down like you do.Its not so easy if you didnt ever put pistons in before. You need to get your rings as tight as you can with your ring compressor, and when you put the piston in you should be able to push it in with a hammer handle. If you have to knock the piston in it could bounce and a ring pop out.Plus you need to get that ring groove out of the top of your sleeves if you didnt.Maybe you will get lucky and find a piston and a couple of rings.

I looked around and found this, http://picasaweb.google.com/Squidtone/AllisChalmers/photo#5180023987660930722.
Lots of good info and pictures.Your motor is complicated and has to be shimmed,so you definitely need to plastiguage it.
