IH 350 Utility PTO Conversion

I've been told i could put a PTO on this 350 tractor. Approx. how much would it cost?
I've decided to sell this tractor so i advertised it thru local Craigslist and had a couple guys out today to look at it. They said they didnt want it because it has no PTO.
Why didn't IH put a PTO on this tractor? I guess it was an option

If it has a TA it is likely to be able to have a live PTO inserted. (from a 300U or 350U only I think) You would need all hardware and the levers/rods/pivots for the control. Delete options save money and if it was intended for loader work, it would save a few bucks at purchase. Jim

So the 300/350u had an option of
no pto, a non live pto option
and the independent pto. It all
came down to buyers use and what
they wanted to spend. I have a
350u with the normal pto and a
300u with the live pto

Jim.. this tractor does have the kaput TA..I did remove the broken throw out bearing and related wasted parts that were in the bottom of the housing. Live PTO would be cool but I betcha you gotta have a working TA.

Nope, some came without a TA but
with ipto at customer request.
I'll see if I can did up a cross
section diagram of the 300
series ta on back.

Ha, found it. So it's hard to
see because not everything is
labeled, but the TA in this
diagram can be seen directly
above where you see the IPTO
seasonal disconnect clutch.
Above where you see the IPTO
Driven shaft is the TA clutch
assembly. The IPTO DRIVEN GEAR
COMES in ahead of where the TA
is located and the TA has
nothing to do with the IPTO.

You have to have upper shaft 4, gear 8 and shaft 12 in
the bottom of the area as fx described in front of the
dry clutch where you removed those parts, see link.
Not sure if you can verify if the PTO drive is in it by
looking in the seasonal disconnect. That is the item
shown in the separate box in the diagram. On a Farmall
tractor it sets underneath down ahead of where the
drawbar anchors. Not sure on a utility never been
around one, it has to at least have a plate there they
use the same rear casting. It would be about directly
below the brake covers.
Edit: I see in the diagram by fx that the seasonal disconnect is farther forward then I thought was.

Could better answer the question if you see what letter or letters follow the tractor serial number, or no letter.

It is not that easy as it is not just pull the back cove off and stuff a unit in . To do so firts ya have to Do a souble split then tear into the ft and back down to the running gears of a kattiedid. and start Adding pieces and parts And MONEY along with TIME . Now with out seeing whats inside and what is there and NOT THERE . Yqa may even need a new pressure plate and input shaft known as the IDPTO input . Not even sure what rear end housing could be on it . In my years of tractor buying i have seen large frame tractors with out PTO's at sales that could be bought for less then scrap price and ya you could install a PTo as ya would find the unit's layen around for 450-650 bucks , BUT you would still be missing pieces and parts inside the tractor and yes you could find used but the labor involved and time was NOT worth the effort . Sooooo ya may just want to hit it in the head and part it out . and call your buying experience a learning payment in the world of tractor buying . I made many payment on tractor buying education.

Unless someone removed parts in the past it has the internal parts to run a IPTO. You need a pto unit, operating linkage parts for the tractor and the rear connecting shaft from pto input up to intermediate PTO shaft. IPTO unit from several tractors will work but need the utility shifting parts and need the extension housing for the main PTO housing when using on a 300, 350 or some 460. Bigger tractors in that time frame use the same PTO without the extension. Lot looking at a 350 PTO don't realize the extension is removable from rest of PTO.

Yes and no. That unit is from a 300, 350, or 400 Farmall. the Farmalls had the control lever in that bracket toward the camera in the first image. The 300, and 350 U have a totally different control system. The Utility lever is pivoted on the top of the axle with a bracket. The lever is much shorter. The pivot has an arm rearward and upward that attaches to a bent rod that connects to the same place. I will try to find the diagram. Jim

I do not know how many different drive configurations are to be found on different models other than 300/350 Utilities. The link shows the lever and linkage I was describing. The small cylinder thing shown in both the one in your pic, and the one in this diagram are spring loaded actuators that actually apply pressure to the band inside the case. The pivot shaft and woodruf key are often a fail point and need to be carefully checked. (mine has a larger key than stock for that reason). The bands are a wear point and must be relined at a shop that can do it. The adjustment (my way) is in the archives here. Jim
the lever.

Maybe this is what i need??
No those are parts that go inside the other box looking
unit with the shaft coming out of the back from the
eBay add in your other post. Which yes you will need
one of those units, I figured you understood this. I
believe the actual unit is the same between the Farmall
and Utility, the controls are just different, see link. The
part in that photo of the add for the complete unit that
has to bolts screwed in it is removed and part 13 in the
linked diagram slides on there and you will need the
rest of the controls as shown as well. The parts
mentioned in my other post as well as by others
provide constant driven power to that unit. The unit
has the clutches which are actually bands on planetary
drums that engage and disengage the PTO. Navigate
to Subsection 347 in Attachments in my link to see the
inside of the IPTO box unit. You should try to find a
way to peddle this tractor to some collector. A 350
utility diesel is a fairly rare bird. No one here has
jumped on it because they know the TA is lunched and
the engine has been patched up.

Why didn't it come with a PTO? Farmers didn't buy anything they didn't absolutely need and they could not raise the cash for. If it saved them $1 by not buying it, they didn't buy it.

You're getting answers from both extremes here. The only way to know what kind of a job it is is to remove the cover and look at the tractor you have yourself.

If it came from the factory with no PTO, there will not be an IPTO shaft to power a PTO unit, and it will be a major major job to add.

If someone removed the PTO unit, everything will be there ready to go.

Odds are if there is a torch-cut, or otherwise crude, plate covering the PTO hole, the PTO was removed by a previous owner. It is unlikely that someone who would remove the PTO would go to the trouble and expense of obtaining a factory cover plate. Someone who would go to the trouble of obtaining the factory plate would repair the PTO.

So it is likely that you have the hard job of installing a PTO, and it's not worth it.

FOR SURE, if you but that overpriced PTO unit off ebay, you will never get your money back out of it. You're best just selling the tractor as-is, and taking your lumps. Just because a couple of guys didn't want it because of no PTO does not mean nobody will want it.

You are advertising that it has NO PTO, right? If you are not mentioning that people are not going to be happy with you wasting their time.

Since the serial number only has a S suffix not counting the D for diesel it was built with a t/a to accept a IPTO.
Needed parts short shaft with two couplings, the pto unit with spacer shown in bay picture and Utility type engage and disengage operating linkage. 350 utilities came standard with a solid splined coupling instead of a seasonal disconnect. Don't remember if you had tractor split at rear of engine. May want to make sure shaft with spines connected to pressure plate is all good and teeth on gear and one it drives is okay before spending money on a PTO. You can take cover off where pto goes after parking with front end a good bit lower than rear to see if shaft turns, But still can't be sure it would under load without a PTO unless you rig up something to turn pto shaft and see if engine turns several rounds with trans in neutral. Then still some question if it would hold under full load.

Here's a pic of the cover plate on the back. Looks like a factory.

Also I took a pic of the two removable covers on the bottom. Inside the rectangle cover there is a gear right inside the cover.
