IH 404

My neighbor has an IH 404 utility tractor with constant clutch problems. He replaced the clutch again a few weeks ago with a new pilot bearing, now it's out again and the pilot bearing is worn to nothing. He says the shaft wobbles. If I can fix it for him, WE will have a tractor for odd jobs and pasture care. Has anyone been in these trannys? How much dis assembly is necessary to replace the main shaft bearings. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If it is a Bushing, there might be a problem with the finish on the snout of the clutch shaft. If polishing it causes the clearance to be more than .0015 to .002", I would use a new bushing fit to the snout. Polishing should be round and around, not longways, with 400 paper. lubricate it with Mobil 1 red synthetic tube grease. If it is a ball bearing, and it is coming apart, there may be a higher strength bearing with the same or compatable sizes.

Surface finish on both FW and PP are important, as is the uniformity of lever height when installed. Good luck. Jim

dave,it sounds like the problem i had with my 404.put a pilot bushing in one year and it was out the next year.

before you put it back together,remove the shaft. you probably have to remove the torque tube to do this. i know i did.

the coupling at the tranny has 4 bolts in them. their a special tapered bolt. if broke, replace them.

in between the coupling, there is a thin plate. examine this plate very carefully. if it appears the holes are egg shaped, this is probably the problem. i know it sounds crazy, but that was the problem with mine. egg shaped holes.

Thanks! I'll go look at it today. I've been too busy building a new pole barn since my wife said the old pens and loading chute weren't "pretty" enough. I don't know, to me pretty is something that works. Oh, well I needed that exercise for digging holes through rocks with an iron bar. At least the framework is now up and 2/3 of the rafters are on. I will look at that tractor today and get back to all of you. Thanks again for your help.
