IH 496 disk

I am looking at a 496 disk 18' with 7.5" spacing. It's needs all
new blades. What should I replace them with. I always used
shoup for big orders like this, but people are telling me to use
the earth metal blades from ih. What's everyone's opinion on
this? And any idea what it's going to cost me?

How long are you planning on keeping the disc?
If you watch the sales at CaseIH, you can get the blades for around $27 each for 20 inchers. If you have any rocks to go over, you will bend the cheaper blades---or break them. The earth metal will
outlast the cheap ones 2 to 1.

I plan on keeping it for awhile. I don't do a whole lot of disking but I really like the 496 because it's width folded up is narrower than most. I guess I should replace all the bearings while it's apart too

Just check to make sure they are not made of boron. The boron blades cannot be rolled as they will chip out. I replaced some on my 490 years back and they had boron in them and when we rolled them the edge chipped away.

I agree go with the earth metal they will be way more durable. Over the years we have not had any trouble with IH earth metal blades but have with jd blades on a different disc in the same conditions. as far a wear in a side by side test earth metal blades on the opener on the planter outlasted others by a considerable amount.

Go to your local CaseIH dealer and get all your parts there. Earth Metal blades are by far the better blade. Wait for "open house" prices or tell the parts manager to put your needed parts, if not in stock, on a stock order.

We just replace only the bearings that need it. We've got 2 original bearings on the 470 yet--no grease zerks.
