not trying to start a color war here, but how much horse power does a 3020 diesel have compared to the 706. i spent alot of time on a 706 and it always had alot of power to pull just about anything. i started driving a 3020 at work and it just seems like it lacks the lugging power that the farmall has. are these two tractors comparable or is the 706 bigger?

I checked a couple of tractor spec sites and find that the 706 has a 282 CI engine making 72 HP
The 3020 has only a 227 CI engines making 71 HP.
I would bet the extra 55 CI gives the IH a lot more low end torque. Like they say"there is no replacement for displacement" ;-)

Hi Jon , I don't know if the site tractordata .com is accurate or not but it said the diesel is 270 ci for the 3020 . The 706 came with a 282 ci early on and then was switched to a german 310 ci engine both diesel . So in both cases you are right - "there is no replacement for displacement" ...Randy

Whups, my mistake. I was looking at the 3020 gas/propane engine 227 size, had I scrolled a bit farther down the page I would have found the diesel engine at 270 CI.

I agree. In fact the early 3020 was rated 65hp compared to the 706 at 72. Deere made a few refinements to the engine and got re-rated at 71. Meanwhile IH put the German 310 diesel into the 706. Probably had 75 to 80 hp then, although I dont think it was retested until the 756.

Just throwing in my 2 cents worth. I have spent alot of money on my 706 trying to get it togather. Bought a 301 out of a 806 had it bored +.040 bought every thing new except crank and cam. Told it would pop a 100+ horse. Been setting in shop don't have time to finish. Put over $3000.00 in it so far besides giving $5500.00 for the tractor, just to have a strong Red Power field stomper.Wished some one would buy it so I could buy a 3020 and get some work done!

$5,500 for a 706 - your out of our mind.

Plus putting in another $3,000 = $8,500 in total.

Should have bought a 966 or 1066 instead

The claimed 65 hp was at 2500 on the PTO. However rated 540pto happened at 1900 rpm. Do the math and you'll find the 3020 is a 49 hp tractor. A very good 49 hp tractor. Power wise ,it compares well to a Super M.

Actually the PTO on the 3020 is at 2100 rpm. I have a 3020 and a Ford 5000, my friend has a 656. All diesels, all 3 seem very close on power. The 656 with its hard starting engine and transmission that is awkward to use on my hill farm gets used the least. Even my friend would rather run the JD or Ford, usually the Ford just to try and save some of his pride. :>)
