IH 915 Pro and Con

Looking at a 915, 2WD hydro, with a 1063 corn head. Any thoughts? Looking to do 80 acres corn, and 60 beans. Very resonably priced, in decent shape. Unsure of hours. I cannot afford a 1400 series yet, and was unhappy with the results of subcontracting the work out last year. Prefer to do it myself. Thanks for any opinions and insights!

Did 400 acres with a 815 from 76 thru 81.

If it is in decent shape and the price is right go for it.

Any combine can go bad at any time.

I had searched through the archives on this site, and it seems that the 8/915 are unlilked. Other folks say they are a good machine, which had gotten me wondering. Thanks for the reply. I am going to "test drive" it Friday. It has 2050 hours on engine. It is a corn and bean special.

I have a "77 815 diesel that I run about 400 acres with a year. Spent a lot of money on new parts, (field ready, yea right,) but after that has been a very good machine. 915 should handle 6 rows fine, I can go 4.5mph with a 4 row in 170 bushel corn. Just got a 1666 so this will be the backup machine, hope to get it repainted!

Had a newer 915. This combine apparently had more than it's share of engine fires. Debris builds up around the engine. Just be sure to clean this area every couple of days when doing beans or wheat. Other problem is marginally enough cleaning air for heavier crops. If seperating/cleaning becomes a problem you just need to slow down. Changing some right side belts can be hassle.

take care of it and you will be fine. A lot of the 915 in my area at one time. A good machine is a good machine buy what you can afford and can work on.

A 915 would be a good machine for your acres

My Son was at a seminar in Iowa 2weeks ago and was told that case IH were going to start building new 915s and shipping to china

Well, apparently some other fellow had a faster pen and checkbook than I did, as the machine is now sold. Drat. Anyone have a 715/815/915 diesel with some heads that they want to get rid of? In Wisconsin? I knew that I should have bought a machine before combining season, but could not swing it, until now. I had only wanted the 915 because it had a 6rn head, and I planted 6rn. Seemed to be a good fit.
