IH B414 glo plug testing

Those GP's have TWO terminals each and are connected in SERIES by copper buss bars.

You can check ACROSS the terminals on each GP with a test light while holding the GP button depressed...

If the heaters are ALL good, the light will glow dimly across each GP 'cause there will be 1/4 of the battery voltage across each.

If ONE GP is burned out, the test light will NOT light across the other 3 and will glow brightly across the "open" GP.

If MORE than one GP is "OPEN", it gets a little trickier... one way is to check them individually with an Ohmmeter, looking for very low (a few Ohms, at most) and equal resistance across each.

Also, there should be NO continuity between either of the terminals and the metal body of the GP.

Simple way is to use a continuity tester between the tip where the wire attaches and the body of the glow plug. If no continuity then the glow plug is burnt out!

Just remove the wires/bus bars.....otherwise, if you have at least one good one, all will test good... BTDT....

They are "open sheath" glow plugs. So, when you pull them out you can easily see if they're bad. Coils are right out in the open where you can see them.

By the way, they are rated to operate as less then 1 volt each - so don't try to test hooked to a 12 volt battery. That will burn out plug faster then instantly.

One other comment . . B-414 uses the same glow plugs as a Mercedes 190D car. There are new fast-heat 12 volt plugs available that are being sold for Mercedes but work fine in the IH B-275s, B-414s, etc.

did that to my little tractor. GP's were a third the price and heated to start in 10 seconds at -20 celcius temps. Just had to use a different pushbutton and wire it direct to the battery and run a seperate heavier wire to each plug.
