I have a ih 606. Motor is bad. I havnt
verified yet my engine. I think it has
the d236. Does anyone know if the bolt
pattern to the transmission is the same
whether it is a d236,d282,d301. My
Understanding is identical block. I
have found a d282. I want to make sure
it will bolt up. I also found a running
656 tractor with the bad hydro. Will
that engine bolt up to my 606?

I think they are the same, i tried looking it up, couldnt get a definitive answer, but the 4bdt cummmins is a SAE 3.

Block will bolt in but the flywheel is smaller on a 460-606 and the 656.Not sure about manifolds etc. but there was changes made on the 282 after the 560.

The 606 does not have frame rails. Anything with a D282 does have frame rails.

Did IH do anything with the engine blocks to compensate for the lack of strength from the frame rails? Cast oil pan maybe?

The 236/282/301 will all interchange IF you use the tractor flywheel, rear plate and front timing gear case. I put a D301 in a 460 utility years ago, brother has the tractor now, and it's a little sleeper now power wise!

I think he will need a tin stretcher for the hood though. The 236 is a 4 cylinder is it not? And the other engines 282 and 301 are both 6 cylinders are they not. About 8 inches more block to cover. I've only seen a couple 606's and one was a diesel. and a utility. Though I don't know that there was a 606 in a row crop model.

All three, D236, D282, and D301 are six cylinder engines. Blocks are identical on the outside, D236 and D282 are 3 11/16 bore, dry sleeve blocks. The D301 is 3 13/16 inch bore with no sleeves. The EARLY 236/282 had wide flange slip fit sleeves that the head gasket sealed on the flange. The LATE 236/282 blocks used a thin flange heavy press fit sleeve that the head gasket sealed on the block with no sleeve flange contact.

The 236 block is same height as others are, the wrist pin in piston is the height difference for the 3 11/16 stroke. The 282/301 stroke is 4.039/4 25/64 inch.
