IH M GOV QUESTION

I have a M that has a lazy governor. I took it apart and the fly weight pins are wore pretty good. What can I do to live'en it up? would like a m&w or rocket but I can't seem to find one. I do mostly dead weight.

Replace the pins with some cut to length grade 8 bolts with nuts. That's what I run.

While you have the weights off. Grind 1 to 1 1/2 oz off each fly weight. This will make the governor recovery quicker. Make sure your weights are equal in weight...

An easy way to keep it even is drill holes in em rather than grind. A small hole clear through then go bigger till u loose a certain amount of weight

Wouldn't the location of the hole play a part in how the weight swings?

I have worked on these stock governors quite a bit. If you use a drill bit to oversize the holes they will be off center from the original because the hole in the weights wear in one direction on the leading edge of the rotation. Mounting them in vertical mill and using a mill end is the only accurate way I have found to make a new oversized hole that is centered on the original hole. If they are wore so bad that the pins are wearing in the carrier then it is easier to start over with a different governor. Once the weights are repaired then comes all the linkage that gets wore as well. A set of adjustable hand reamers and some oversived pins works well. Then comes the throttle shaft and housing. If they are wore a lathe and a bushing is required. I have always had enough good parts to not have to rebuild the the throttle shaft housing but it would be simple enough. We are not talking about enlarging the pin hole, but instead drilling holes in the solid part of the weights themselves in order to lighten them up. Typically, I put a large hole as close to center as I can get it, then two smaller holes on either side out near the ends of the weights.
