IH model 70

Just bought a model 70 4 16 trail plow. Got to using it in the
field, got it pretty level, running reasonably deep, not a ton
of top soil in places, doing a good job filling the furrow, but
the tail wheel is all over the place. Played around with the
rod with the spring, and adjusted the movable chunk on
with the stop bolt (dont know what proper terminology is,
the part with the U shaped slot). But cannot seem to get the
bushing to find its way into the U shaped portion. Its about
2 inches from bottoming out on the U slot. Im assuming it would take some of the weight of the plow, hold a consistent
depth and run on the edge of the furrow. Though it just
wiggles around, and the rear furrow will jump a tad if it
wants to. The bushing on the vertical portion of the wheel
spindle is worn, but comparing to the good condition #60 3
16 plow in the shed, it should still function. Theres quite a
lot of slop in all bushings/bores on the whole rear assembly,
so Im assuming its been doing this for awhile - the whole
assembly has basically no weight on it so everything is
flopping around.

Im sure its something basic, just not familiar with these
older trail plows. Read a couple forums and it seems people
dont think much of the functionality of the whole set up
back there. Hopefully someone can help me out.

If it is not changing depth and stays following the tractor straight use it and forget about it. Our Deere 6 16 trailer plow has done that for 45 years now. IT didn't seem to affect the plowing job so just let it flop back there. It does it's job of holding the backend up when not in the ground so don't worry about it.

Funny you say that, because that was my conclusion, figured shed be alright. Doing a plenty good job as is. Just wondered if I was overlooking something basic. Seems like a marginal set up.
Thanks.

I'm pretty sure if the plow is working properly there is little to no weight on the tail wheel. It's there for transport.

Wear all the pivot points and linkages is probably why it doesn't lock into the U.

I got three 70's. i don't think there is much weight on the tail wheel, but none of mine, jump around, they run straight, but my dads Olive plow did, you would think it would of worn out the stem, but never did.
