Implement Question

Hi y"all - my TO30 came with a 5" finish mower and a Ferguson 2-bottom plow. I have maybe 10 or so posts to put in, and was thinking about buying an auger-type PHD. Another part of me thinks it might just be easier to rent a Bobcat with a PHD, do all the holes, and be done with it, saving the implement $$ for a scoop, rake, etc. What wisdom do you have to impart to a newbie?

Also - is there any real advantage to vertical v. horizontal exhaust other than personal opinion? I need to replace the muffler etc. Thanks!

One issue you will have with a TO-30 is that it does not have Live Power. I.e. To move the PHD up and down it must be turning. Also, The tractor transmission would have to be in neutral.

If all you see the need for a PHD is this one job you may want to rent.

vert. exhaust dumps the exhaust in the drivers face, while horz. sends it aft. If you are haying then there is a small risk of fires with horz. exhaust if dry grass is exposed to hot sparks or exhaust pipe.

Thanks - I"m sure I"d need the PHD again, just not in the immediate future. But my concern about safety and ease of operation seem to be borne out by your comments. There"s a farmer down the road with a post hole driver attached to his big old IH - maybe I"ll just ask him for a day"s help. And I guess I"ll just leave the exhaust horizontal the way Mr. Ferguson designed it. No real risk of fire here to the pasture I have. Thanks again.

Point, I have a PHD for my TO-20. First couple years, I used it all the time. Don't think I even hooked it up this Summer. Guess I've done most of my PHD jobs now. If you have one project, then rent. If you see an ongoing need, then buy. Your TO will run a PHD just dandy. You only want to run your TO at a fast idle, and clear the hole a few times while digging, and to place your hole, raise the lift, stomp the clutch to stop the PHD, then lower the auger into desired position, and let off the clutch. I even drilled 60 degree holes for grape trellis end posts, had no trouble doing that with my TO.

I agree with Jeff on the rear exhaust... unless your running a backhoe. Whenever I run my backhoe, I get a headache after an hour or so from sucking exhaust fumes.

I have a manual auger and consistantly use it off and on. I will be getting a 3pt PHD sooner or later. I also think it is a case of "once you have the tool you design with the tools you have available". Get the PHD.

I prefer the horizontal exhaust myself.
