Installing Cork Rear Seal?

Can anyone give me any advice on installing a cork rear seal in a B Allis? Should I soak the seal in water to soften it up so it fits easily around the crankshaft? Should I use any Silicone sealer in the groove in the crankshaft?
I want to get the seal in correct without any leaks and would appreciate any advice or tips.

Thank you.

Correct Way To Install The Cork Crankshaft Seal??

Big Question that opens the discussion to (Opinions)

When the cork seal was first used there was not a silicone product for that on the market.
In the 1950's cork gaskets were put in with heavy grease in those types of applications where I worked. A shellac gasket glue was used in other areas.

If the cork gasket is old and dry soaking in water will soften it up and would be in order.
I have used a light/very thin coat of silicone in that groove as well as grease and have not had a leak problem either way. I use plenty of grease to slide the cork seal over the crankshaft. Take your time to keep from breaking the cork when sliding it on.

Is there a lip seal for that application? I think I remember seeing one on one of the parts places on the internet. Seems to me I would use that type of seal since I had no leaks on my front lip seal I installed this year.

No lip seal for them. They started with the D-10 thru the D 15's. The seal and retainer will fit the B, C, and CA's but you have to get rid of the sprial groove on the crankshaft. I have the D- 15 crankshaft in one of my B's and one C. I have the lip seal on the C and the felt seal on the B. The crankshaft ends are the same diameter on both as well as the bolt pattern.

DickL ,

Is there a Speedy sleeve available to cover the spirals ?

John

I never tried to buy one that large. You might be able to. You would still have to buy the seal retainer for the D 10 thru D 15 to use the lip seal. After buying the speedy sleeve for the smaller diameters I was afraid to price them.
