i had a drum explode i have another one to put how is it to install do i half to unbolt the axle housing

You sure do.
I was taught not to waste time trying to remove the old one. We would kind of hang the final drive/axle housing from chain falls with the old drum resting on the anvil, and go after it with a big chisel and hammer.
Then drive the replacement on with a piece of pipe.

If you have access to a large bearing splitter and the legs, strong back, and jack bolt for it you can pull the drums off. You can use a porta- power jack in place of the screw. I've done it twice. Installing the drums is easy. Stick them in the oven on about 300 degrees for about an hour. I used a temp. stick to be sure they were hot enough. They will slide right on. Make sure it goes against the snap ring and hold the drum against it for a couple minutes as it cools.

Driving the drum on against the bearing is not good. Heating it is much better.

Use Never-seez on it if you think you might ever want to take it off again...

Interesting how the restoring standards of today are so much more stringent than the methods of an AC dealer years ago. But then these things were almost 40 years younger when I was learning !
