I will soon be ready to put the TO20 back together and there is one area I would like to deal with that I need help with. When I tore it down I noticed that the inside of the trans housing and the rear end were painted red (red lead?)and had remained perfect over all those years. The exception was the inside of the top lift cover casting. Up there it doesn't get much lube and was just full of rust. I cleaned it up but I know it is going to rust up again. While I have it off to rebuild the ram I want to do what I can to deal with it. Any one have a suggestion as to what kind of paint can I use in this area that will resist the oil and moisture that will collect up there? Thanks, Jack

The paint used inside cases is a special paint . Eastwood sells it . I've checked auto parts & they don't carry it so Eastwood seems to be the place . Its expensive . I had used an expensive red oxide primer inside my egine & trans case on my 8n Funk conversion before learning exactly what I should've used . But its too late now . Hopefully it won't cause me problems down the road . I'm planning on building up a flathead v8 & building an 8n conversion eventually , so I will get the proper paint for that project . HTH ! I forget what the original red paint is called but it is intended to stop electrolosis, particularly at joints involving dissimilar metals. The exact original formula is no longer available for environmental reasons.

I took the details to a major paint manufacturer in Australia who recommended one pack etch primer as a suitable replacement which would do the same job. I buy the etch primer in spray pack cans for around $12.

The TEA20 transmission and diff housing is cast aluminum. Don't use Selastic or similar silicon sealants in joints - it is prohibited in the aircraft industry as long term it corrodes aluminum.

Gyptal paint is what is used to seal cast iron . Looks like red oxide primer. Check out GE gyptal.
Under the transmission cover I might treat the rust with phosphoric acid and cover it with grease.

My TO 30 lift cover had an ugly tan coating of some kind that had done a great job. You might consider a two-part epoxy coating such as those used on and in industrial piping if you can't find the materials suggested below.

Jack hello, I would like to recomend painting it with fiberglass resin, Soaks in the meatal and stops the rust and seals it forever in a coating like plastic. When i restored my 35 i painted all the spots that were prone to rusting on the fenders etc. with resin and then painted it. it's holding up very well. Buy it at any parts store in quart can with a tube of hardner. Reguards-ed
