International Baler

My son just picked up a 440 IH baler that looks as if it has had very little use. How good were these balers and what years they made?
Also, does anyone have a manual they would sell for it?

I had a 37 and it was ok. Small old baler for today. Now have a 440 all twine. Came to me with sisal in it, I put poly in and have not looked back. Mine will miss one every hundred or so. I can live with that. Needs to have sharp (new) twine knives in it. Some quirks you will learn and a manual will help. I grew up with IH balers so I'm fine with its operation. Not a lot of IH baler lovers thou.

I just started using an IH 46 baler (I think somewhat related to yours) this past season. Once I had it serviced...it baled very nicely...nice tight bales. As with any baler...the real issue is if there is something broken..thats where the expenditure is going to be...was it not used much because something broke..who knows. But once its working...if its anything like mine, it should be good.

I have used a 440 for 16 years and it works well. Yes, sharp knotter knives do make a big difference. I can't crowd mine when the windrows are heavy, but it does well just chugging along. I don't know if they are all like that or not. Bought mine well used and have done a little fixing up on it over the years but it has paid for itself many times over. I got a manual from the dealer after I bought the baler.

Thanks for all the input. It has been stored for years in a hay barn. Time to clean it up and check it out.

i had a 440 and when new it was ok. late i had a lot of problems with it, but i'd ale for the public and it was nothing for me to bale at least a tousand bales every other day. i found that keeping the trash out from under the knotters made so much of a big difference that i mounted an air tank on mine just so when it started missing bales, i got off and blew out from under the knoters and it would go back to working. i never knew why but one string on mine was a lot closer to the edge than the other one, so much so, that you had to pick it up from the other side to keep from pulling the strings off at times. i've got the orginal knotters manual for them and would send any body a copy for cost. the cat no is gss-1424-k. don't know if case can get you one or not.
