international.i-4 shift pattern

i have an i-4.i have a repair manuel,it states an i-4 shift pattern is the same as a h except 2and3 are different.is it all the way left up is rev down is 1 in the middle is it 2 up and 3 dn or is it 3up and 2 down.i havent drove it much out of rev and 1st.and is 4 all the way right up and 5 down or is it 5 up and 4 down?your help would be thankful

so what your saying is its the same gear ratio all except 2nd and3rd.well i will put excatly what the book says.gear shifting is also different in that the second and third speed positions are interchanged.thank you

I am not saying that at all. The speeds are progressive. Each gear has a higher speed than the next starting with 1st and ending with 5th.

When I speak of ratios, I am using your antecedent regarding the comparison of an I-4 to a H. Industrials use different ratios from the Farmalls.

I doubt if it is possible to engineer the reversal of the 2nd-3rd slider and the reciprocal countershaft gears. But even if it was, the 1st/2nd shift and the 3rd/4th shift would be very difficult.

Isn't the shift pattern cast into the rear frame lid?

2nd and 3rd are still 2nd and 3rd, 2nd just faster than 3rd. I always thought they just flipped the sliders and drivers on the shafts, until I realized that all the speeds are faster than an H so I really dont know what they did.In the coming years, I wil have to pull my top to repalce the gasket, maybe if i rememebr Ill have a look see then. What year is your I-4? I have a 45.

In the I-4 owners manual it shows the position of 2 & 3 are swapped on the gear shift pattern. See page 8 in I-4 Owners Manual INT. 6049.

The overall speeds are faster because of the ring gear and pinion. However, the position of 2 and 3 are reversed in the shift pattern.

Intereting, my manual makes no mention of the shifting pattern, but all the pages are in tact.

Maby they changed the shift pattern during the last few years of production, but, both my 1944 owners manual and my 1947 I-4 tractor have the swapped shift pattern with 3 up and 2 down.
