Is plow sizes determined by tire width?

Tractor is a Kubota L2900 with 420/70-24 rear tire size.i know it usually goes on horsepower for plow size.but does it also go on plow size for width of tire to run in furrows? Would that tire size work with a 2-12 plow?

The tire that is wide just rides higher in the furrow. plow adjustment tilt side to side is adjusted to plow the same depth on each share. Important is the distance between the inside of the tire and the first landslide being equal to the plow size. Jim

Well, I have 420 rear tires and I am pulling a 3x12 plow. I would have said it wouldn't work at all but judge for yourself on my field.

If you measure the width of the furrow you'll find that it is wider than the plow bottom cut width due to how the soil rolls over. As Delta noted, it is entirely normal to run tires several inches wider than the bottom width and it causes no harm or difficulty at all.

Plow bottom size really has no relation to tire size. I have seen a 23.1x30 tire in a 16" furrow. But better to have an on-land hitch plow for wide tires though as a wide tire will break down the furrow and pack the soft turned soil leaving an uneven line in that furrow. It may even tear up the inside sidewall if there is a lot of tire slippage....James

Typically you have less slippage on the furrow wheel than the land wheel plowing in the furrow . At least in the fall that is so. I plowed with an articulated on 20 inch rubber with 18 inch bottoms with no problems For myself we always plowed on land with everything.
