At about 3PM this afternoon we lit a fire in my old engine, here's some more pictures of the assembly and tractor.

Inside of plenum, nice radius shaped inlets to the runners. I press the tubeing over an jig to swedge the ends. Airflow does not like blunt ends.

View of SBC fluid dampner, pointer indicated to dampner for timeing purposes. Water pump from a SBC, just tapped pipe thead in the ends and pump water in the front and back of the cyl head. OUt the top through 4 ports, one by each exhaust port.
1236.jpg

View of manifold, plenum sized to engine...... or at least what we think it should be.
1237.jpg

Rocker arm assembly, I built it from scratch. Girdled studs, and the ends of the rocker shaft are held down by L shaped brackets under the end head bolts. I broke to many shafts in the past, this fixed the problem.

A couple pictures of the tractor,

We tested the tractor around the yard today and had to make several jet changes to the carb. We put a chain under the loader so we have good down draft on the drawbar and make a pass in the yard, stopping the tractor with the loader each time to try and put some load on the engine. After a few passes and some tuneing I decided to let it lite hard. It really seams to run well at 2500 RPM and above, but 4000 it really lites hard. I took it for a few passes in 3rd gear and let the engine wind up, I backed out when I thought it was up around 6500, pushed the recall on the tach to show 7050 RPM. Here's a view from the seat.

Looks like you are very creative. Are those ARP head studs. What fuel pressure does it take to feed that engine. Alot of machine work had to go into building that. Where do you find classes to pull something like that where there others so that you have some competition.

We don't really have any rules around here Dave. I had ran NOS now and then in the past. Just be naturally aspirated and make weight with proper safety equipment.

Here's a couple pictures of the thunder pipe. A lot of reserch and time in it, trying to figure the length for intake and exhaust runners, volumes, etc. Just a few hours anyway. There's more time in the manifolding and cylinder head than most people have in a whole engine. It's built to a length I figured out and all runners equill length into a paralell merge collector in a rotational fireing order.

Flow testing, figureing, more work and more testing. It all has to come togather and work as a package. It appears that my carb is way to small right now, but I'm thiking that the carb will support more than the block will take, hopefully the carb will limet the engine to stay togather, but it's all just a big experment. At least if it comes apart, I'll recycle the parts to my new shortblock assembly with a 5 main crank and much stronger block. I still need to get the wrap on the header.

I've got to thank the guys that work for me, there's been anywhere from myself to 3 more fella's that work for me cranking away at this project in the shop on a couple rain days. Steve Vermeer. at Induction Reserch in Shakopee Mn., a real wizzard on airflow and a great teacher. Richards Machine, he's helped out a lot with his lifetime of experience, an old engine builder and cylinder head guru. Guys like Jon Jamison of Jamison Equipment, a true gentleman and an oldtime Allis puller with some good advice. Allong with a few lifetime friends who I'd bet wish to remain un named.

Yeap like I said no prblem getting rpms out of it . Should pull 3rd gear fine if it dont put some more cubes in it.

Marty, that's a LOT of impressive work. Did you get to run it this weekend? Hopefully you got a video.

I have to ask the question though, if there aren't any rules where you pull at, why not just start with a V8? You've already got the 4 barrel carb, custom intake and exhaust and modified the frame rails.

That's an impressive little Allis you have going there! I assume from one of your posts that you are in MN? Will you be pulling in the hot class against the Farmall 460s and one particular Allis 180 that runs up there? I've been trying to find out the rules for that particular class but those guys don't really want to share. I know one for sure who's pretty curious about my MM projects I have going on. Anyway, good luck with yours, and like I said, I'm impressed at the amount of engineering you've gone through there.

Well Done! This is more impresive than the guy i seen you put a six cylinder in a unstyled wc for pulling.
Same tractor i have as well so its nice to see someone else with a really nice example of what could be....
Very nice.

I have a 460 very similer to what you have done What you will find is that open class is not open The first time the tractor showed up everyone was courius all first place's and 2 second Seconds were first time pulls My tractor runs small cu. in. lots of rpm 6800 Have steel flywheel bell blanket engine diaper side shields so safty is not an issue. Then came the rule changes now MPH 8 I pull about 15,3000rpm I turn 6800 My motor cleans up about 3000 rpm My complaint is The competition can run as many cubic inches as they can stuff into their blocks to make horse power But won't let a small cu. wind up to make horse power. Another way to eliminate competition. Open should mean OPEN Run what you brung Our pull at MO/ARK PULLERS has that and is a great show for the spectators As long as it has a tractor motor and safty equipment. We are considering A V8 class or what ever you can fit in the frame class. The grass grows real fast in these classes and its a good show PS I also pull a super M in classic so you know I'm not bashing the other classes. OPEN SHOULD MEAN OPEN

ll that airflow I am betting you had to increase the carbs jet size.

before you fella's spend a couple days argueing and cluttering up a thread about a project which you know verry little about......

with a siamesed port head, I can never come close to the VE that I could of an engine with individual runners, or a much better designed engine to start with, so a 260 CFM head may sound good, but in reality, I still can't feed the cylinder to what say a big block automotive application could if the cylinder size was the same.

Also, with the airflow capacity, the engine size, in theory it shold make peak power around 5000 RPM, so where do I size my parts to?.

So how much carb is optimum? A 2bbl is rated differently than a 4bbl, but what does the carb in the picture do? Is it modified in any way?

If the engine size was doubled, how much carb would be used on a verry large displacement V8? But that engine could have near double the head flow of mine, also it's got a much higher VE rateing.

I posted some specs from the engine months agoe on another forum, the keyboard in TN told me that "there was no way it would run, and that it may run on tractor fuel at best". I don't know, it ran for a few years and did just fine. Last week I was told it was a 4bbl carb, but I pointed out the obvious. We can't beleve to much from some people is what I'm getting at. It's been shown time and time again over the last few months.

Don't try and argue about something you know nothing about, no one cares and I don't have much time to mess around anymore.

The truth of the matter is that I can't say what parts are "optimum", I can only make educated guesses based on math, physics, and testing results. Then I can tune and test from there. It sure is fun to try and figure it out though. My parts don't care what I or anyone else thinks, they are going to do what they are going to do, it's up to me to try and match and tune them.

I did put a couple hooks on the engine the other night, they missed the distance the first hook so I got to run again. Did just a little tuneing in between runs. Honestly, it ran like crap both runs. BUt it did fight a lot harder than I thought it would, and for popping and banging the whole way, got all the tractors but one, it ended up in 2nd place behind an outlaw IH 450 with a big Holley downdraft. I need to try 3 small things and eliminate those little potential problems and see if it cleans up and runs smothe. If it does, it will be fun, but to busy this weekend to do any pulling, and if I'm lucky enough next weekend I'd like to travel 850 miles to a 1000 yd shooting match that I alwayse try to attend. But we'll mess with the tractor and get some more testing done and hooks on it as soon as we have time.

BTW, MoPower, I hope you enjoyed that phone video that got forewarded to you of us messing around in the yard.

hop airflow salesman is now starting to sound in reason .One wanting to sale work promotes work with numbers and lack of detail for astonishment.

good thing I've alwayse been in reason, given details, descriptions, accurate information and numbers. Even posted pictures, that way people can see........ unless they are blind or their mind is clouded by jelousy.

What people can understand or comprehend is not up to me, I just do my part to present the information.

Kind of reminds me of someone calling BS, but then getting proven wrong time and time again. Keep your $200, buy food, developing minds need nutrition

let me point out exactly why.

1. it's real simple, I'm USEING it....... I do have a tractor to run. Actually I've got two tractors to run when we can get out and enjoy a pull.

2. you lie, you've been proven a liar a few times, I'll point out one more example in this thread, the most recent to refresh your memory. You reply to KMD saying some numbers that before you've stated that you can't beleve, that would imply that you are either lying to him, or you beleve it, it is one of the two.

I can't trust someone who lies,
A. I'd never get the head back.
B. You'd lie about the numbers anyway

You really need to come up with something better to do. You just keep mekeing a fool of yourself. Some people get things done, and have things to show for it (the case of most people here). Some just quote others and try and whine about what others do....(the Pankey saga).

On a side note, I did give pictures and information on that head, now you've begged many times for me to send it down there, but why don't you actually do some work and see what can happen. It's amazeing what one will learn. What do you think an Allis head could do if one filled around the intake runners, bored it out and layed the sides of the port way into the valve bowl in a nice sweeping radius? I don't know, but I do know what I'll do different if I do another one. I know that there's more potential yet. Why can some BB automotive applications make so dang much power? Because somewhere allong the way, someone did some expermenting and work and got things figured out. Why do you beg to have my parts in your hands? So you can learn something? I've given accurate descriptions and pictures in another thread....... There's a lot to learn, some people learn slower than others, but keep working Pankey, you'll get there. Just rember that not every kid gets to be an astronaut, some go about an unhappy existance at a lunchpail job.

a FOUR INCH D17 HEAD was the one you worked so much it needed fabrication to hold the valve guides in the picture is a three inch head on running tractor. It is verry hard to comprehend a lie that the teller cant remember long enough to tel nit the same way twice. I ve got the two hundred put up or shut up.

Pankey,
I'm going to point out the obvious once again, you don't seam to even know what you are tyring to argue about.

In that same thread that you are so concerened about, there are 2 different heads pictured, go back and actually look at them READ the descriptions of the work............ than you won't make an idiot out of yourself if you read and understand.

The 4 inch head underwent a lot of fabrication, it's a work in process yet. It pulled some pretty good numbers, but I never posted any of them. I will say out at Induction Reserch in Shakopee Mn, we pulled a test on it one time when I was out there, and it went to about 292 CFM, Steve just smiled and said " that's @$^&%#%$ awesome" I've doen a lot of testing and changeing shapes, some results are great, some are terrable. But that's what's fun about the project, a fella learns.

The 3 inch Leroi head in the pictures, is also pictured on the tractor. It's the head I alwayse ran. It's also the one you have such a problem with. It to went through some work. I've described it, also shown pictures and outlined things on it with a paint marker. You woiuld KNOW this as you've quoted me on several things on it, weather it be in one of my threads or the time you posted a picture of one laying on a BB head and I told you that there was more potential in that old casting on top. That is in your "Allis pullers I've been thinking thread". That head is a finished product, on the tractor and running. That head got filled around the intakes and then flayed back into the valve bowls with a nice sweeping radius. It tests pretty good...... The Leroi casting is a much better cantidate than an Allis one, start working on one and you'll find the differences in valve bowls and how it's cast to be at an advantage.

If you are smart enough to look at that thread, you''ll see pictures of the 3" Leroi head with the work done, and paint marker outlines on it. You will know it is the Leroi by the spark plug pockets..........

LIke I've posted in the past. At least be smart enough to know what you are tyring to argue about. You just make an idiot out of yourself time and time again.

I know you have read the posts and seen the pictures, you've quoted all of it..... unless you're only knowledge is to quote and not read or understand.

I love putting up posts, descriptions of items and work and pictures, people may learn something, some may enjoy it, but the Pankey just complains...... that tells us what we are all made of now doesn't it.

Sorry Pankey, try again, you'll either learn something, or you'll give up

Why cant everyone just get along.I dont understand why you cant just sit back and see what other people are capible of. That is how i look at alot of things people are doing on here. Both Mitch and Wi50. You both have done some pretty cool stuff with tractors that are from the 30's 40's and 50's dependinmg on the model. I dont see what it matters if someone says they build one bigger than you build one... I sleep well at night knowing the jobs that i do and how my tractors run. Might not be up to snuff with others but it is the best i can do with my money and tools. I think that is how everyone should look at it.
If you have somthing no one else has...just be proud of it no matter what anyone says.
Anyways.....just want you two to know what alot of people probably think on here. You both know alot about this stuff. Just dont let it make you guys look bad because you are always arguing.

Deere,
I don't have any problems, except for 1. Someone tells me that I lied. I did not, and I've posted plenty of things to show what has been done. I hope that many have either learned something, or get the notion to try and learn what they can to help themselves out.

I've got a good reputation here and in the community, I've worked hard to build a good business and maintain good relations. I don't appreciate some idiot telling me that I'm full of BS....... when they have no idea what they are trying to argue about, it's been shown time and time again.

So every time he tries to tell me that I'm lying or that this or that does not add up, I simply point out things that have already been posted or covered. Now his next card to play is this head or that head, or claim this or that, but he's read it, quoted me on it and knows that he's been caught lying and trying to make argument.

Have you noticed that any thread I start and show any work, describe any work or show any pictures has to turn into an issue with 1 certain individual.

Yea i have noticed that and understand what you mean. Just saying there shouldnt be any aguing about it but there is always and instagator...That starts it all.
So yea understood same here. I dont like people telling me what i know is wrong but i am open to learning new things and trying to do new stuff that i havent done before to get more power.

im just saying you know......haha but i do understand too.

(quoted from post at 14:36:26 06/04/11) You are one jealous POS. Spend more time in your garage doing R&D and less time on here arguing with people.

Pankey,
it's simply amazeing, you will call me a liar on a public forum when you have absolutly no clue. Either you're to lazy to do some work, to stupid, or just a lying idiot who's looking to cause trouble. It's one two or all of the 3, and I'd hate to be labled as that guy, some women have no self respect either, maybe you're new screen name should be Ms. Skankey. Sounds like ML Pankey and it's about the same mentality or social classification.

I've mentioned some people in past posts, wonderfull people, be nice to them, treat them with respect, learn from them. Go experment and learn on your own, consult with them and the results can be wonderfull.

I and everyone else would trust those people, we would not trust someone in Tn. who's crying and lying would we?

Would I mention people, would I show pictures if it weren't true? Man that would blow a hole in a tight story if it were all just a lie. But like usual, I give good information, pictures and sources. Pankey gives BS and rambleings

I don't even argue with Pankey, I just point out what he misses......you can't argue with an idiot can you, but you can point out to those who understand what the idiot forgets, misses or makes up.

Masterblaster,
you hit the nail on the head.

So how much does it cost to sit at your computer and argue? Electricity is cheap, and you've got internet service anyway.

What do you suppose it costs to run around, see people, pay for services, test parts, buy shop equipment, tooling, etc. Pay machine shops, buy parts, buy materials, pay my people to so some of my legitimate work so I can have some fun working on the tractor, or I can take the time to test the parts and learn what I can from them? I'd hate to know what the "true cost" is.

You can't put a price on knowledge and fun. Learning is expensive, complaining is not.

Sort of puts things in persepctive.

September is not 10 years and counting . you made a pull yet ? oh but in your words you use cheap used and junk yard parts that cause the phone calls to go to what can i do on a 1500 dollar budget . answere is a stock rebuild. As I point out again the sales man is getting a little more realistic now that his putputs together.

Hey Skankey,
Why did you ask me if I made a pull yet?

You quoted a post of mine on page 2 of this thread that answers that question. Reading comprehension my simple minded buddy, reading comprehension. They teach it in 3rd grade.

Further proof that yo're just trolling, you're able to quote and try and argue, but it's alwayse easy to point out the obvious information.

And what in the world am I trying to sell? I accept no monetary compensation for any of this. I don't mind giveing out information, tricks or things I've learned or done, nothing is top secret. Anyone who asks a LEGITIMATE question gets an answer. I do sell my services, you see I make cute babies and I only charge $15 (subject to prior consultation of course) though I'll even do that for free for the right blondes.

Try again, it's been amuseing, I'll check back in a few days.

PS, doing any "trash texting" these days? I hear you like to worry about me. You really should quit, people are starting to make fun of you.... I'm glad you care so much about me. Got any neat parts to show? Done anything lately? Made anything? Learned anything?....

been buisy carrying three grand a week to the bank from this union nuclear power career to do much mores than eat and sleep now. So worrying yourshelf about me eating is a waste of your time and brain capacity.

is there any way you could post a scan of a paycheck stub, last years tax return, or any evidence to prove you are not lying again? Any sources to verify?

Now of course I'm kidding, but I am makeing the point that all the information I post is backed up by pictures, numbers, and sources of other individuals who have had a hand in the projects in subject.

That's why it's all water tight, no leaks, no changeing the story. It's all legit. Please read and think enough to put it all togather and don't harass me anymore. It just makes you look bad. Does anyone else do the same things as you try? NO.

They all think it's a neat project, and I'm glad to share it. If you can't handle the truth, than at least keep it to yourself. Others will agree I'm sure.

Simple math . 40 hours atraight time 12 hours double time 20 hours time and a half on a union scale pay rate of 39.90 hr. How did you like my suttle way of showing how easy it is for you to lie in the reply post you made to shaggy .

so what did I "lie" about there to shaggym?......... just curious, yep we built new manifolding on an old and improved cylinder head. Though I know you don't like it, afterall you've told me several times how "there's no way a header can help".

If you've been paying attention over the last few months, I've reserected my old engine. I made some improvements....... It's all been posted or shown here, I can't help if you can't interpret things correctly, or if you are just trying to cause trouble.

I'm sorry, but I'm done explaning the already explaned to a simple minded child. You just can't help some people.

convinced myself i didnt need them the ones i had used worked before. 3grand a week is just during a refueling outage where theres overtime . Jamey how you been doing

I'd like to bring this thread back to the top, someone needs to read some of it again.

Thank's for the comments fella's. I'll find some more pictures of stuff sometime.

will help get it back to the top. Its Alive and happy finishing second.

I'm pretty happy with second a couple times, after all I'm up against IH 460 running built engine and downdraft carb, or WK40 running a built engine and multipal downdrafts. Pretty tough competition for an Allis you said wouldn't run. It is more fun to go pulling than sit at the computer and complain about what someone else is doing.

Big upgrades this week, a better fuel pump and an oil pan heater.

I have this tractor listed for sale, pulled this old thread up to show some pictures (old pics are gone now). I tried to make a post of it but someone got upset......again. I'll try this and hopefully he can be quiet this time.

you'll have to click "modern view" to see it, and ignore 3 pages of crap

There's some upgrades and things currently on the tractor or that would go with. Summit fuel pump, regulater and new plumbing. There's a new Stroud clutch/bellhousing safety blanket still in the box. Spare pistons, rings, connection rods, rocker arms, push rods etc. Cams and cam blanks.

I've been working on a few odd projects for it. We'll see if I get them done or not. Doubting that it will sell. I'll keep working on a few of the projects as time allows. They go with it to anyone interested.

It's for sale as I don't have much spare time in the summer and there is another tractor that I wish to put my time into. An alky light superstock (if time and wife will allow)
