J/D 4630 shaft replacement

I am looking to replace my PTO shaft on my syncho-range tractor. Is this a complete tear down, or can we access this from the top of the transmission?

Remove the bolts on the bearing housing where the shaft comes out the back of the tractor and the shaft will come out with the housing. Be sure to drain the trans oil first. The front gear will stay in place in the clutch housing with the shaft removed.

I actually broke the end, so it drained the oil for me. I removed the end plate and bearing, but the shaft appears to be pinned from the front end. Are you sure that it is removeable from a synchro-range transmission?

Here's the parts schematic of the pto shaft. I'm wondering with shaft removed out the rear as Cliff stated what holds gear(parts key #6) in place?

I think if you have the 540/1000 combo, then the shaft is removeable from the backside. This one is just the 1000, and its has a S/N over 7000 so it is 1.5" dia. Does anyone have a procedure for replacement and what components that I need to take off. I am hoping that it is not a complete teardown.

Parts photo i posted is for a 1000 rpm shaft of which is the only type pto that was available for a 4630. Photo is from the 4630 parts catalog.

Jim I'm not sure on the 4630 But I have removed the
shaft on my 4640 it is heavy and needs to be played
with a little to get back in But its not to bad
Something must hold that gear in place as the JD
dealer told me it would work and it did.

Jim, your picture is for power shift while the tractor in question is synchro. Quad and synchro use the large gear on the front with the tin shield around it. The gear will stay in place due to close proximity to the clutch housing not giving it room to fall out.

As Jim said big 1000 only on 4630. Power shift may not come out as easy but quad and synchro the shaft should come out the back without any problems.
