If I can condense thinking of others, it may be the most dreaded JD of all. There is not much to reward ownership. The engine is a strange beast with all four cylinders made into a single unit that has a head plate holding the cylinders hanging down from it. with the plate sealed at the top, and sealed into the big block cavity at the bottom. There are issues of reilability and cost associated with it, and other components as well. Nah. Jim

The gas ones were better than the diesels, for the most part. The good ones (either engine) were good and many people that had them liked them. There were many, many, many people on the opposite side of the fence, leading the1010 and 2010 to be considered the worst tractors JD ever made. The engines had the infamous wet "decked" sleeves (the four sleeves were part of a plate making it a one-piece assembly rather than individual sleeves. I would not recommend one for group use by any means. Maybe one person taking proper care might get by.

This could turn out to be a breakout the popcorn post for you.

Run don't walk away from it. Parts are hard to come by and cost an arm and leg and well lets just say it was if not the worst JD tractor ever made

A 1010 is basically a 430 with a 4 cyl engine. So is better than a 2010. Motor is good if it is good. But a 420 430 435 is better.

Despite my handle and love of green and yellow, I'd advise against it. 2010's were John Deere's red-headed step-child from the day they were produced and delivered to dealers' lots.

remember forest gump. Quote the following “Run Forest, Run”!!! Neighbor had 2 years ago. Needed 2 in case he wanted to use 1. Spent a bundle on them To keep them going. Have no idea why he kept them.

With enough time, money, tools and expertise . A gas 1010 can be made to operate reasonably well. A diesel 1010 or any 2010, run run away as fast as you can.

Buying a used one, you really need to do your due diligence looking at it. With that being said and all the warnings duly noted, my neighbor of 40 years dad bought a gas 1010 new in 1963. They used it on their 30 acres as a chore/hay tractor for 40 years until they quit farming. It is now retired to light duty, but still gets out a couple of times a week. Other than tune ups, tires, and a couple of mufflers, it hasn't had any repairs done. It has 50% more power than an 8n, but after running both, find my 8n much more nimble and user friendly. My biggest complaint is that it steers like a tank. Maybe there is something wrong with it, but its been that way since I lived here.

I had a 1010 gas with a loader that I bought used in '82. It saw a lot of use as a chore and hay raking tractor; was trouble free for the 15 years I had it.

Same hear brought new in 63. Grandpa busted the trans I don't remember the issue other than dad made/repaired a gear other than that the engine has been rebuilt. All it does now is run a brush cutter the hydraulics are weak and like you say steers extremely hard. Grandpa was a cash farmer it was the only tractor he had. My cuzz put a claimer on it good for him I never cared for it.

I had a gas 1010 that was a decent tractor. I had a valve job done on it and never had any other issues. It was fine for running a 5' mower.

I would say that as well. I've heard the 1010 referred to as the "John Deere Farmall".
When the city my dad worked for sold their Farmall A mower tractor and bought a JD2010, then a Belarus, my dad told the city commissioners they would have been better off buying a Farmall C because it would have been a better tractor than either the 2010 or the brand new Belarus!

I still have a pair of 1010's around. One is a diesel blade machine, and the other is a gas crawler loader with a backhoe on it.When I was building the blade machine I drove across the state to R.N.Johnsons for parts.(they stocked a lot of old crawler stuff) Two weeks after I got the machine together it dropped a valve, and it went through the side of that sleeve assembly. When I went back to Johnsons for another deck assembly I told him what had happened. He made a joke that maybe I should buy two, just to have a spare,as he had two in stock. The machine shop that had done the head had made me a pretty good offer to pay for my damages,so I did have a pocket full of money, and I bought the second deck assembly too. That one is still greased and wrapped up under the bench. They cost me $238.each back in the mid-80's.
