JD 1240 Plateless

Any opinions on the JD 1240 plateless corn planter? Neighbor has one for sale that they have outgrown. Seems in decent shape, they used it last year. They converted it to liquid fertilizer a few years ago. Did they really have plateless planting figured out and working well that long ago? I know there are parts availability issues, I just went on JDParts and found that the bottom pieces of the seed hoppers are no longer available.

Thanks for any input.

I've got a single unit planter with the same finger pickup and it works OK but the updated version introduced on the 7000 series was much better. Likely more accurate than an IH 400. If only planting a few acres I would buy it and be content.

You must have the '#80 plateless' unit planter. Now,correct me if i'm wrong, the 1240 is a pull type planter with a common drive off the wheels.

I plant 20-40 acres a year with one and its been a good planter. Mine works best with larger seed sizes. I clean it out after done planting and store it in a dry place. I found that taking the finger units apart every other year for cleaning and inspection. The bushings need a little grease so it turns freely. Parts are expensive but I have found a lot of like new parts at the salvage yard and stock up on alot of wearable parts.
