JD 2010 knocking

I have a gasoline 2010RU that's been running good, other than being extremely cold natured. About a month ago I started it up, set it at a fast idle and walked away to do other things whilst it warmed up. After a few minutes it started rattling loudly so I shut it down. Since then I've started it to see where the noise comes from, using a stethoscope. It seems to be under the valve cover at the front end. The noise isn't constant, the tractor starts up quiet, starts knocking after a few minutes, gets quiet and starts knocking again etc. This weekend is my first chance to dig into it. Any ideas as to what I might find?

First thing I would do is drain the engine oil and check it for metallic particles..That noise could be a bearing turning on a crankshaft journal.. Maybe take the filter apart and check the pleats of filter media for metallic particles.

Could be a stuck lifter or broken valve spring.

If it had been an early diesel 2010. I would have said "it was knocking at Death's Door".Just push it through.

I bought a 3010 diesel that knocked so loud I told the owner to shut it off before something flew out and hurt someone. He had a mechanic look at it and he told him the same thing. I bought the tractor at a good price , brought it home took the value cover off, and the people whom worked on it before forgot to thighten the rocker are assembly down good, thightened it up set the value runs better than new. might try looking under value cover first. good luck Rick

I have a 63 2010 industrial. For the last ten years I have had to loosen the engine oil drain plug to drain off a ounce or so of antifreeze before I run it. Check yours. These blocks get badly pitted around the cylinder seals. Good luck.
