JD 2010 Transmission (Synchro-Range) Issues

I need some help with the tranny on my 2010. 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, & 8 gears all work great and go in every time. I can get 5 by first going into 3 then 7 and finally 5 and it will stay in. I have never been able to find 6.

I took the cover off a few weeks ago, and all of the gears look good. I ran a magnet down in the cover and there weren't any shavings, so I figured I have a linkage issue.

Using the JD service manual's procedure, I reset/adjusted the linkages for the speed change and range change shifter arms yesterday. The only result I had after doing that was that I lost R3.

Any suggestions on where to start?
Thanks

I can sympathize, I have syncro problems as well with my 2020D. First with the top off the tranny check the rollers on the end of the shifter fork dowels, there are two in front and two in rear, they had a tendancy to fall off the early models. If they are missing it will give you shifting problems because the forks can't push the drum far enough. They are available at JD dealer or a quarter inch drive 7/16 socket drill out and cut to size works as well. When you have the top off work the shifter and check the syncros to see if they go fully into gear, bump the starter and if it dosen't move or grinds it's not going in all the way. I have more but out of space.

I better correct my first message, it should read 2010D not 2020. When you have the top off the tranny try to put it in one of the speeds that won't work, 5th? then try pushing the drum in with a screwdriver or something similar. Disconnect the linkage at the tranny and the shift cam should be in it's detent position on the side of the tranny. Wiggle the lever to be sure. If you're missing a roller on the range compartment the tractor has to come apart.

Ok, after no luck with anything else, I have decided that I need to look into rebuilding/tightening the shifter linkage. If I grab either of the rods running down to tranny, have someone hold the shifter, and then wiggle the rods, the whole shifter mechanism seems to rotate atleast 1/4". That seems excessive to me?? Any thoughts.

Ok, so if my plan is to try and take the slop out of the shifter mechanism, where do I need to start. Looking at the parts breakdown doesn't give me very many starting ideas besides a couple of keys that may be worn. JDParts says the quadrant is NLA so I am hoping that is not the key issue.

Any help is appreciated.

Good Afternoon, I realize it has been a while since this posting was made, but I have a 2010 with transmission troubles. The transmission is the only thing on this tractor that I have not rebuilt. I know these tractors have a lot of bad info out there and the shifter is certainly something that I wish John Deere would have done better, but I really like this tractor. It has about 450 hours on it since the engine was done. Now, when you drive the tractor sometimes, it will come to a halt. It will not move until you get it out of gear. You may drive it a while and it will do it again. I do not hear any grinding. Getting it out of gear when it halts, is difficult. But it finally comes. I took the top cover off and I do not see anything broken. The synchronizer discs are loose and I assume bad? I have bought some used parts and new synchronizers. I really dread this big of a project especially after all I have already done. I would be very grateful if anyone had some ideas that could help? Thank you very much!
