JD 2020 hydraulic shifter

I've just looked at a JD 2020 that I'd like to buy and it is 'stuck' in reverse due to a hydralic pump failure.
Is it a case of simply replacing the pump to fix this?

I assume this 2020 is an 8 speed with the hydraulic reverser on the Dash?
How much are they asking for the 2020? Gas or diesel?
Do you have hydraulic test equipment?

The problem is not always the hydraulic pump on these hydraulic reverser transmissions.

There is a roll pin in the shifter linkage down under the tractor that sometimes shears off. I believe it couples a hollow coupler to the solid shaft going into the valve. You might want to check that.

The problem could also be something else inside the unit. You will definitely need some hydraulic test equipment to diagnose this problem, and it can be expensive to repair. Expect to spend $1000 or more if the problem is in the unit. It may be less than that, but you should be prepared.

It is a ~1974 JD 2020 with the 8 speed and hydralic reverser on the dash. It is gas and they are asking $3500. The paint is fine, with good seat and a 'Crager' steering wheel, not original?

The owner said the bucket (it has a front-end loader on it) bounced some and so indicated a weak hydralic pump.

I have no test equipment for hydralics, I have trouble fixing my hydralic jack!

I plan to check the reverse linkage per the other response to this question.

Thanks!

$3500.00 is about right if the tractor was operating 100%.
The 2020 is a 1966 to 1971 vintage machine.
Pull the trans filter and screen. If you see something ugly. Offer the guy $100 for the tractor then sell it to a salvage yard.
Is the loader plumbed through the scv or direct off a the high pressure line then back through the trans oil filter cover?
