This thing I am about to junk out. It is a Nice 212 that has a rebuild engine by a local machine shop owner, that runs for about 20 minutes and then acts like it is not getting enough fuel.

So new points and condensor, cleaned fuel tank and got it running again. Today out using it,ran great, mowed and did other small stuff, then all of the sudden acted like it was out of fuel and just died. Can not get it to start at all, fuels the carb, good spark what am I missing??

Do you have good spark when it dies, if not try a coil. Also I have had some valve seats loosen up on briggs when they get hot. Later, Dan

FWIW, I think it's a Kohler.

I had a 214 that had a coil heat up and it would quit. Found that by taping a timing light to the hood and when it quit I watched to see if the light kept flashing.

Are you sure it is not losing spark? They had a habit of overheating the ignition switch due to loose terminals. They even offered a "kit" of new terminals to crimp on, back in the day.

When you cleaned the fuel tank, did you unscrew the botton outlet and clean the screen?

How are you determining that it is getting fuel? Have you cranked it and observed that the fuel pump is operating? Maybe a piece of debris got lodged in the main jet?

Is the fuel pump working? The check valves come loose and they only sorta run. When those tractors were new they would get hot and a valve would stick open on some. When it cools down will it restart? Did they put in a new valve guide?

There is a little plunger that opens the points, sometimes when they get warm, they will stick and hold the points open. Might check that.

If you have spark when it wont fire, its got to be fuel. Could be something floating in the tank that plugs up the outlet.

Alright guys here is the update.

1. Has really hot spark
2. When cleaned the tank, replaced the screen and petcock after flushing the the tank several times.

3. Got it started and ran great, ran for about 20 minutes and then acted like it was not getting enough fuel again. If I pulled the choke it would keep running but would be doggie.

It has been doing this ever since I got it and really look for ways to fix it.

When it starts to run rough, take the cap off the tank. Might be a venting issue. Could be a venting issue at the carb, too.

How do you vent it at the carB?

You need to clean out the carb again. If you find things in the fuel sump that look like pieces of dead ants, that's the inside of your fuel hose coming apart.

Well ya seem convinced its fuel. Hows the float and needle valve. Check the intake gasket and carb bolts. It must be something when the engine heats up, 20 minutes seems a long time to run with a fuel problem. Is the gas fresh, I've had treated gas get milky. A little Seafoam sometimes seems to help. I had a 212 once that would do the same thing after running hard in hot weather. It would be running fine then just coast to a stop. Let it cool down a while then it would fire right up and get back to work. Really scared me the first time it did that. This would usually happen a couple of times per summer when mowing grass.

Should be easy to tell if this is the problem because when trying to restart the engine it is obvious that there is no compression for the starter to fight against.

My dad had a 200 once that all of a sudden quit. It sucked one of his makeshift air cleaner screws through the carb and held the intake valve open.

ALl carbs have some passage that allows atmospheric air pressure to enter and nmormalize in the bowl, other wise the vacuum can suck the bowl dry, or the fuel pump can't push more fuel in. I have attached a link to a very good pictorial of how to completely clean that Walbro carburetor. They are not tricky, but there is a lot to dissamble before you can say it is clean.

I have a carb kit here, was going to rebuild it again, today it just ran like junk. Popping and spitting needed to have the choke on just to keep it running. It has to be the fuel system but not sure what. we will see

Why do you think I invested in one with a completely rebuild motor, verse one that is dug out of a shed? Damn thing should run if it has over $700 in the engine alone.
