Just bought the John Deere 1984 model 2150, 3 Cyl Diesel Engine. The tractor seems to run fine until you go above 1500 RPMs Then it starts skipping(I guess) and white smoke coming out the exhaust. Also the tractor will not cut off when the ignition switch is turned off, had to choke it down. It traveled about 200 miles today on a trailer also. There's at least 3/4 a tank of fuel in it also. I have no clue were to being with this tractor. I only have experience with the older Ford tractors with gas engines. Can any one give me advise or help what to check and were to start troubleshooting the problems. I have ordered the shop and user manuals just haven't received them yet.
Thanks Very Much!

Bought an 1120 one time that did the same thing. Very similar tractor but older than yours. We were hoping to find the problem in the injectors but instead discovered it had a cracked piston. Hope that's not the case with you. Costs a pretty penny to rebuild.

always start with the fuel filter frist and air filter you need new anyway to get base line on hours filter will fix diesel troboles most off the time

I have a 2350 and the "ignition" switch does not shut down the engine, the orange knob does. It is a fuel cut off that stops the injection pump from injecting fuel into the cylinders not a choke. The other problem sounds like a fuel filter. They are around $12.

As I said I do not know any thing about the diesel engine. Thanks for the info! I replaced the fuel filter and all seems to be OK now.
Again Thanks Keith
