JD 246 information

We had one when new and I don;t think it ever had a model on other than paint. And they did not put serial numbers on implements at that time.

Thank you for the information. I am going to look at a JD planter that looks to be a 246. Been setting in a barn for the last twenty years or so. Was in working order when placed in the barn. Seed plates and hopper may be in bad shape?

JD 290 planters had a serial number stamped on the main frame near where the right hand marker attaches if I remember right

A lot of people say that but I had 4 of them and nothing on them in that area, same with the 490 I had 2 of them and nothing on them either. And he is asking about a 246 planter that is a 2 row 3 point hitch planter with the only part of frame being the hitch in front of planter. Nothing like a 290 planter

The 246 & 247 are the only 2 row 3 point hitch planters JD made and only difference is 246 has only what is called a corn seed box while the 247 has a combination corn-cotton seed box. Those not sold here in Ohio so never saw one of those boxes. As far as plates unless visibly broken they will be OK. Boxes can be either good or rusted out but average person should be able to make new if needed but boxes from 290-490-494 and other newer larger planters fit. What you need to check is wear on box bottom plate and operation of the seed knockers. 2 different bottom plates, both flat onone side, other side one has a narrow grove for larger flat kernel corn, second type a large flat grove foe giving a heavier seed rate for soybeans. Same plate fits all Deere plate planters except horse drawn.

hanks everyone for the information

I have a 246/247 I fixed up and use to plant Sunflowers. It was well used and neglected when I bought it. Took quite a bit of work and some farm engineering to make it work as it should. Bearings are all steel on steel and if not greased properly will be worn out.

I made brackets and used roller bearings on the drive shaft then used Babbitt to fix the worn out bearings on the chain shafts. Rusted out Seed hoppers were fixed with Bondo and found Sunflower plates on eBay. Fertilizer hoppers and components were toast and not worth trying to save.

Was well worth the effort, at least to me. If you get it and it needs any TLC I'll be happy to give details on what I did to get mine in working order.

hank you very much for your offer.

Have not been to see the JD 246 yet. Trying to get there. Had truck break down. Got it fixed so I can pull my trailer to get
another piece in the area.

Looks to be in fair shape. Have some pictures but not good closeups. Seed bins great condition. Right fertilizer bin small damage at bottom. Could be patched. Tubes at bottom seems in tact. Runners ok. Chain drive looks to be all there. Row markers right and left. Looks like last planting was mix corn and beans, still in bin. Seed plates seem ok. Now need manual to help educate myself on how to use and maintain. Don?t know how to post pictures yet.

Trying to post pictures.
